About to take my school finals for GTAW next week. (No certification, just passing the class..) Not that I'm good enough yet, but they don't certify GTAW at my school because the place they go through for weld verifications doesn't have an XRAY machine. Nearest place is 1.5 hours away at $700 a test, cash up front

But I just use my stepdads tank. Free gas lulz

 

I bought one from a local shop

Mine isnt big and cost me 160 and 30 to refill

 

How much was a rental vs purchasing?

Also, have you made a back purge doohicky yet?

I have another smaller tank ill use for back purging

 

Since you have access to CNC you can make some pretty cool backpurging backing plates.

Also some 'wedges' to fit into piping, and then you can just make it so you can thread an extra gas lens into the wedge to purge it.

No we just have two cnc machines where i work.

I shoot the machinist a double double animal style and we in business

As far as a plug or wedge, you can just it a 4x4 with a lathe to machine it into a cone, drill a hole through it for the gas nozzle, plug it into the pipe.

They make rubber ones too that you can clamp down that expand and fill the pipe (think like a sewer main access pipe plug) and they have attachments for the nozzle.

Was on airgas' site for a quick minute and it looks like a 60 cu.ft. tank is about 0.81 cents a day.

 

Is that dependent on how soon you return the tank?

I know the place my stepdad gets his tank filled they don't charge a rental fee if it is exchanged within 30 days or something.

 

At that rate just buy your own right away.

 

LWS 60cf 155 +10 for first refill.
Airgas 60cf 160. Dont know if that was filled or not.

 

This damn welder has been taunting me since I first saw it.

I'm embarking on my first turbo build and I figured it'd be a good chance to learn welding instead of having shops do all the welding. Only real welding I should be doing is my exhaust. I bought 2.5" mandrel bent aluminum piping. From what I understand, aluminum isn't the easiest to weld.

Literally the only reason I'm considering this product is the price. At $84 with a coupon, the price couldn't better.

TLDR: Going turbo soon, saw cheap welder, is it worth purchasing?

No dude. Spend that money on a TIG welding course at your local community college.

Then go buy an AHP 200 off amazon, if you want a budget welder.


Also, you can't weld aluminum with flux core. You need a spool gun for MIG. And welding al with a spool gun sucks imo.

And did you buy aluminum or aluminized exhaust piping? Two different things.

 

Wow. Loads of information here. Yeah I figured there was something fishy with that welder.

The exhaust tubing is definitely not aluminum, it's aluminized, my mistake.

That course doesn't sound like a bad idea, I'll have to look into it since it will most likely pay for itself in the long run. Besides, it's a skill you definitely need for working on automobiles.

 

After a few minutes in the FAQ I feel like an idiot. Not even worth getting a MIG welder for my application.
I'll most likely end up taking that class, and use a friend's welder until i save enough to purchase one for myself. Not to mention i have to have a place to put it. lol

 

Mig has it's place. You could weld an exhaust with MIG. I did it. It is not as nice as welding it up with TIG, but it gets the job done. I wouldn't go around welding IC piping/manifolds with it though.

Also, you can pick up a used 110v Hobart/Lincoln/Miller ('brand names') MIG machine for 350 if you hunt around a bit. Brand new machines can be had for 5-600. You can do a lot of fab work with those machines too.
