I bought a block that had spun one rod bearing recently. And i was wondering if this looks okay to use still. This rod wasnt spun but i just wanted to make sure that i could use it or if i have to get new ones. Also i cant feel and scratches or imperfections on any of the 3 rods.
I would have a machine shop take a look at it before using. I figure since they rebuild things like engines for a living they can decide better than random people looking at a pic on the web.
Agree, it's kind of hard to judge from pictures. A machine shop should be able to triage them quickly for you.
The good news:
- If you're building an engine for anything over stock performance, you should be replacing the stock rod bolts with ARP, and those require the rods to be resized anyway (which will fix that)
- If they do need to be replaced, LS rods can be had for cheap.
Building a reliable engine requires one to critically inspect parts that were suspect before... especially if the engine had a failure. I agree with the suggestions above that you should have a machine shop measure the rod for roundness. One more sure test: IF the color of the rod is darker than the other three, then it will need to be resized. Oh, and you don't just resize one rod, you do them all to promote consistent rod lengths.
honestly it just looks dirty. take light grey scotch brite, see if that cleans it up. if it has burs on it or physically damage that you can fell, it needs to be repaired, or get a new rod. pr4 rods are plentiful though.
