Default ryanplayjoint's B20/VTEC Build Thread

Been slowly building a b20v work in progress. The car made 185/127 with rs machine pistons in a rebuild block with new pumps, eBay header, light flywheel, ctr pulley, and sri running Neptune.
Just replaced the bone stock 99 si head w/ a ton of unknown miles for a fully ported 4 piston gsr, performer x, skunk alpha t/b, tuner 3 cams. Scheduled for day after thanksgiving for a retune.

I chose the tuner3s because I didn't see a lot of info out there for them and ease of install. The whole fact or fiction with the valvetrain wear also was a factor in selection. The cars out put when driving is very linear with the new head combo I'm expecting a mad rush to redline at VTEC cover.

Kind of a simple of the shelf build the will hopefully yeild fun to drive power. Nothing has been port matched which I plan on doing then retuning for a real world benefit. Will post new dyno sheet as long as everything goes well

Tuner 3's on a b20v. In for this. What gas/ecu you gonna use for the tune?

Nice. This will be a great comparison of a "stock" b20v.
You'll probably see 50+ hp at the wheels. Should be quite noticeable lol. Good luck at the dyno. Interested to see the gains!

Should be a nice upgrade for sure. What kind of future plans do you have? I bigger header and IM/TB will really wake those cams up on the top end. What injectors? If stock, you may run out of fuel to really put those cams/head to use.

Good luck!

The car has 66mm s2 alpha and a crushed eBay header on rc310s. Very tempted to replace header and test pipe but I'm more interested in an honest real world before and after.

There it is. More HP to be found in a CAI, good header, port matching, and cam gear tuning. Plan on providing all the supporting mods for the tuner3s to see what they are capable of and switch them out for a big boy cam. Looking at the low can setting really shows how small the low can grind is when compared to a OEM b16 cam.

You need a real header and a bigger throttle body before you switch cams

Thinking about a header,tb, vstack combo, w/ bigger injectors. Going by the graph the tuner3 seems to be very peaky.

Nice results! Thanks for sharing! I think your exactly right on the next mods.
What duty cycle are your 310s at? Gonna try some rdx injectors?

The 310s are running appx. 85/90% duty at wot. I'll probably run rc440 because I'm already running rc injectors.

You should switch to a more modern injector. You will see gains from improved spray patterns and better atomization.

Also, I would be pretty dissapointed with the lack of gains below 6k... you wpuld thing there wpuld at least be some gains.

With a small header and tuner 3's I'm not surprised, it's fighting to breathe. He might be able to play with the cam gears and get some more power band, hard to say though. He might have to sacrifice top end if that's what he wanted to do.

Rdx injectors look interesting is there anything needed besides top hats and clips to run them?

Nope. The RDX injectors are pretty much plug and play.

I did search but did not find a concrete answer as to what manifold seal to use with the rdx injector. Is it a trim to fit b series seal?

I took the O-rings off the RDX and used the B series manifold seal. Just takes a little persuading.

I'm questing for 230+ whp and I have penciled a game plan of rdx injectors, plm big tube try y, 70mm ws2 cat back.

I'm stuck on intake selection. The car is dd in spring through fall. The Sri with vstack seems to be the choice for peak dyno numbers. I've been looking at a v2 cai intake with vstack/filter as real world dd intake combo. Not much info out there on this.

The car is currently setup with 3" Sri cone filter, eBay 4-1 (little denting), test pipe, 2.25 cat back, and 310 rc injectors that are near max at wot.

Just like to see what people have done or seen in the past. Even the negative, hating, DB's are welcome to chime in .

Don't waste your money on the AEM V2. If anything, get the 3" AEM for the itr. I've always been a fan of a generic 3" SRI w/ vstack and filter though

^agreed^ you can usual generate equal or better numbers for half the cost or less going generic tubing kits

The car has a generic 3" Sri w/ cone filter. What size vstack would be optimal? 3", 3.5", or 4"?

In for the results..
I remember back in the day (10 yrs ago) my builder and tuner did a b20vtec with the RS machine 84 mm ITR replicas pistons and tuner 3 cams.. he had other things done to the engine and they got 264whp from that engine on tuner 3 cams. .. car was a beauty.. iddled like stock but ran 12 flat on a DC2

Im curious to see what you get as i am also foing for a similar setup as my friend (possibly diggerent cams) and id like to see around 250whp on mine.

This is the 3in vstack combo from ktuned that I plan on using on the no name 3in Sri tube.

Also bought a evap charcoal canister for the check engine light on my 05 impreza winter beater. *thumbs down* !
