Oil pump leak - replace seal+o-ring or entire pump?
Hi,
My D16Y7 (yr. 2000, 150k miles) leaks oil from around the oil pump. I've read some recommendations to replace the entire oil pump in this scenario. However, I've also read many reports of the $1 o-ring being the culprit of the leaks. I've also read that the oil pump itself rarely fails and will outlast the engine. Should I spend $112 on a new oil pump? If so, why? If it increases my probability of fixing the leak by even a tiny amount, I'll do it. Somebody please convince me...
Thanks,
Mr. Future

I would replace the o-ring and see if that corrects the problem. If not, buy the new oil pump. Its better to try out the cheaper fixes first. On the other hand 112 dollars is seemingly not a lot of money. You could just go straight to the new pump and have peace of mind.
The amount of time needed would sway me to just do the whole pump and be done. Considering what your time is worth 2-4 hours of work is enough to make me want to save my time and not have to go back.

Be careful to not damage the inner spring in the new seal when putting the oil pump on and through the crank shaft, be carefull not to fold the lip in of the seal from improper instalation what happens is when you slide the pump over the crank shaft you can fold the lip of the seal in which will cause a leak and usually pulling it back out dammages the inner spring where you end up having to buy a new one and installing it back on the new pump iv done this and its not fun. in that case I use a socket the same size as the seal and evenly pound the seal in dry with a rubber mallet flush to the oil pump. You should be good. The leak is usually from that seal though. Make sure you use honda bond to seal the oil pump to the engine.
Theres also another small o ring you should replace on the oil pump.
Thanks for the tips. I will replace the whole oil pump. I'm doing my head gasket, too. The head will be in the machine shop for a couple of days. Ideally I could replace the oil pump while the head is off, but I need to support the engine and the oil pan is where I would jack it up. Maybe I can hang the motor by a 2x4 braced by the engine bay. Anyone have any tips or pics of such a rig?
