Default 02 Civic LX Tranny died - swap or rebuild?

Okay, i basically i bought the car used with 190k miles (School ain't cheap) and everything was okay for a while then i noticed the car would take forever to accelerate between 30mph and 50mph. It kept going for a while and then one day i started hearing a grinding like noise whenever i accelerated. Yesterday my sister was driving it and it stopped accelerating and it was towed. I was able to drive back about 10-15min with it before it stopped accelerating again. I went to AAMCO to ask about a swap/rebuilt and they said they've seen a lot of bad valve covers on the transmissions an estimated somewhere around $400 for it. If it needed a rebuilt we're talking $1200 and up. They will only install AAMCO certified transmissions. Another ship i went to would put in a new tranny for about $300 and rebuild for again $1200 and up. If i took a chance on a used transmission should i get one from the same year or go for a 04 which i've read are better? The place i was looking into getting one sells them for $450 30 days warranty from Japan with under 55k miles if that helps. THanks to any replies in advance.

Tough break man. Don't really know what to tell you but FWIW I used the opportunity of a failed transmission on an Odyssey van to reassess my vehicle needs and cost/benefit of keeping it. It would have cost $3-4K to rebuild that trans in my neck of the woods so I cut my losses on that van at 100K miles and 13 years of service and bought something smaller. I did get $2K for the van as a trade-in as a bonus.

The cheap and relatively risky option would be the used trans from Japan for $500.
The ideal would be the rebuild done properly with the upgrades (Sonnax), new TC, clutches etc. but would be $1,500 I imagine (mostly labor).

I have been going thru the same kinda of issue w/ my 01 EX w/ only 122k on it .I replaced the tranny w/ one from an 05 .it runs fine for the first few blocks 5 to 10 min then it starts getting slow off the line. When I first replaced it it gave all kinds of AT solenoid lockout codes but I think that was due to a bad electrical connection to the connector on the passenger side plug at the rear of the tranny. I replaced that took it for a drive and now I get 2 codes 1) ELD 2) complete auto trans failure Hmmm mind you this is from a tranny I just put in. the first tranny did nothing hot or cold. so if you find something please do share
