I was painting my recently assembled block last night, and taking a few pics to update the build log, when I turned the crank over to discover this:
The pencil is there for size reference and the "speck" directly to the right of it, is what's causing my concern.
This pic I took to give a better perspective of just how small it actually is...
And if you haven't figured it out yet, the speck you're looking at is a fkn PIT of rust approximately .5in from the surface of the deck in cylinder #2
Close-up.
So yea fellas that's what I'm looking at. And plz keep in mind that the block's already been overbored half a millimeter and my p2w clearance is right at .004 so there's very little meat left in terms of trying to bore/hone it anymore. I guess my question to everyone is: Can I run it? Not sure if it matters, but I don't even think it clears the first ring? It's pretty close to the top of the cylinder wall... idk...? I'm really hoping this thing isn't scrap.. smh...
If you can catch it on your finger nail you have problems
If a shop bored it then i would go chew them out.
If you disassembled the motor you should have seen that. If a shop disassembled that they shouldve seen it
I have a block like that and had others where i see that on tear down. Then i go to the machine shop, he bores it till the pitting goes away and then you pick pistons from there

I 've yet to run a nail across it and hell yea we seen it during disassembly! lol! In my build log you can see the block was annihilated when I started BUT my machinist said it'd be ok and after machining it, it looked great! Tbh it still looked great 2 weeks ago while I was putting the pistons in!.. But last night was a different story? Idk? I just need to know now, if it's trash or not? But thanks for the reply.
Honestly, I've ran a couple of different B-Series blocks that were worse than that. Both of the cars are actually still running with zero smoke issues.

Well that gives me hope! I didn't even think about the possibility of it smoking tho tbh? Are those B series you're talking about boosted? And did you DO anything to the rust to try and stop it from spreading or getting worse? thx in advance man.
Yes, they both are boosted. The blocks were honed as best as it could get, with some left over black rust marks on the cylinders. I'd run that block since it's already together. It's not really ideal, but if it works, no worries. If it doesn't, then we'd already know why.
