Default h23 tranny good for turbo f22?

i drive an auto accord with an f22b1 right now. i plan on getting an fmax kit and other goodies in the future, but first comes the tranny conversion. i heard that the h23 tranny will be better for when i boost the motor? does it bolt straight up to my engine? also, will the gearing cause the car to be slower than an accord with a stock 5spd tranny when it is still N/A?

I'm in the same position, I'm looking for a H23 or H22 5speed for my F23.

The H23 tranny has better gear ratios than the F22 and it should just bolt up without their being any problems. There were a few threads a while ago about this H23 trannys on F22's.

They say the power and torque of a turbo motor makes the long legs (ratios) of the F trannies fine, but it's always nice to have closer ratios (like the H trannies). Closer ratios, you're gaining acceleration at the expense of top speed.

I have an M2S4-5 tranny from a 1996 H23a1 on my F22b2. I love it. I plan on boosting with this setup. Max speed is easily in the 130mph range, i have not ventured near that so I cannot give you an exact #. I can tell you this:

60mph = 3000rpm

80mph = 4000rpm

thats in fifth.

TITE RATIOS YO!!

well i have the f22b2 tranny and its fine with boost, infact u go throught the rpm band very quickly. i say if u r gonna do a auto to manual swap then either is fine but get the h23 just because there is a higher chance if your f22 blows u might put in a h23 motor

so it's better to have close ratios like in an h23 tranny for turbo? or would it be better to have long gears like the f22?

hmmm . . . h23 is cheap, and ready for some boost . . . .

no! no no no! i'm going with the f22b1, my mind is made up. but just for the sake of arguement how much would an h23 run. but i dunno if i want to give up vtec. decisions decisions.

thats a good idea though. run the f22 with the h23 tranny, so if the motor goes i could put the h23 in and then boost that.

so you're saying i could run 130 top speed with the h23 tranny? then what would i run with the f22 tranny? not that i would run it up that fast, just curious.

sorry that i wrote so many responses in there, i'm just really interested in learning more about this tranny swap and all its advantages over the f22 tranny. thanks everyone for the info, please keep it coming.

Given a certain target speed, several close ratios will always accelerate faster than a few long ratios. I think they say in drag racing for the quarter mile you want to be toping out in 4th at the 1/4 mile mark, but most transmissions with stock final drives are just toping out 3rd or starting 4th.

Shifting at what RPM and N20 or not?

Someone please post the 5 forward ratios and final drive of the H23 tranny.

without a doubt. I should have blown up my f22b2 tranny earlier. City driving is fine.

anything with more power should have a longer power band...if you plan on making your car heavily boosted, the f22 tranny is a must...if not, traction and running out of gears will become a major issue....

I was searching through threads, and I read that the H23 tranny revs 4K at 80mph, will it eventually hurt the F22 if you drive 80 on the freeway all the time?

Im going to play devils advocate here, gear ratios are very dependant on what kind of power you are making.

Everyone likes to complain about F gear ratios on an F motor. Sure its not that great, but 145hp isnt worth a damn either so shortening the ratios could help it accelerate, but to a point. Torque curves and what the power looks like on a graph helps Honda and every other Auto maker come to appropriate gear ratios to suit the intended driving style of the type of car.

No one ever complains about a Dodge Viper being able to do 120mph in 3rd or an NSX doing 80 in 2nd.

With relatively low horsepower or high revving peaking power bands short gears are needed to keep the car in the sweet spot. But when you are making real power or lots and lots of power super short gear ratios suck ALOT.

Next time you guys go to the drag strip for a Pro event watch a Pro Honda run.

Ex: Papadakis' tube H22a civic with a custom tranny. He shifts twice in the 1/4 and traps at 180mph... See my point?

Gear ratios are very dependant on how much power you are making.

Anyone ever seen the Jules Integra? Its long since retired but it was a H22a powered Integra with an F tranny that ran in the high 9s. At the time (a few years ago) it was very fast.

Just some food for thought...

How fast do you want to go?

exactly. in drag racing, you want to shift the least amount of times.

ie, topfuel/funny cars don't shift at all, 1gear the whole 1/4.

Lemme play gods lil angel in response to the devils lil advocate:

i chose h23a1 tranny because im not looking for a 1/4 mile beast of death and killing. I want something that is enjoyable to roll around town and maintains good gear ratios for a lil road course use. As cool as spooling all the way to 150 mph would be I never drive faster than 110mph (IF that) EVER on the streets. So a tranny that tops out at 130mph is fine in my book.

mmmmm . . . boost.

but back on topic. so basically the f22 would be better for the 1/4 mile? i'm not looking for a top speed car, i want something that will allow me to be decent for every say street and highway driving. would the h23 be my best choice for this? when i get boosted, i don't plan on running anything more than 15 at the max, maybe 11-12 daily. would the shorter ratios actually hurt performance with that kind of boost on the f22?

I would say stick with the F tranny. Boost needs RPMs to build, but it also needs a load in each gear.

Take a look at the stock ratios for a turbo Eclipse, WRX, Supra and other turbo cars.
