Getting my ED7 BAR'D, What will Work??
Hey Guys,
New to the forum, and to B series swaps. I've assisted in swaps to EF chassis, and EG chassis, but never my own, or LEGAL
--I am looking to find a DOHC VTEC swap for my 1991 Civic Si and get BARD in California. Im from the south bay area and need all the info anybody has for me.
I know I need an OBD1 engine, due to the level of difficulty it should be easier then OBD2.
I am interested in finding a 94-95 GSR Swap, or a Del Sol VTEC B16A3 swap with P30 ECU.
After attaining either swap, what pieces are direly needed that they will look at?
Like for example, i'm looking to purchase a B16A3 swap, BUT the guy doesn't have a Virgin P30 ECU, it has S300 installed, and wants $500 for it. Can I get away with a P72 ECU? or will the REF not approve?
Anybody have full, good condition swaps for sale?

All your emissions stuff must be present. That includes a catalytic converter, stock for the year, O2 sensors, correct ECU, etc. Your best bet is probably a pick and pull yard to get everything or possibly a crashed, yet running, car. That's just the easiest way to get everything I would think.
I think it depends on where you get it checked, but a B16 may not pass your sniffer or whatever with a P72 ECU. If you are running a P72 ECU, why not just get a chipped P30? At least the case will match. You can take the S300 out and sell it alone.

It will need whatever smog related components are stock originally for the engine. No mix/match. Simply put, match the distributor/ECU/block along with manifolds and any/all sensors needed.

^^ This. ^^

The most obvious part in your question was the ECU. If the ref is doing their job, they will look at the ECU to make sure it's the correct ECU that Honda supplied with your engine. Expect that they will look at everything.
Refs are generally pretty cool. They may not pass you, but they help out to let you know what to fix. Don't make it a bad experience for yourself by whining and complaining - they are doing their job.

I would buy the car as a whole, for sure. You should be able to get it at a pretty low price. You can then part out the major pieces locally and scrap the shell for a couple hundred bucks. I would look for a major side impact or rear end. Preferably something that stays away from the motor.

I was given BAR clearance after swapping a single cam ZC into an automatic sedan. Stayed with OBD0. The ref required me to change the JDM intake manifold and add a fast idle control valve.
Like the fellows above said, choose the year you declare for the motor wisely and have all related emissions controls.

Make sure its the flat catalytic converter with the o2 bung in the front. Ref failed me cause I had a round cat from some civic. (first time I tried to bar my crx). Interested to see some pics
You put it in and use a jumper harness BUT...
I read somewhere that earlier this year they no longer allow jumper harnesses. You should check with your local referee to verify. It would suck either way to go and have them tell you no bueno.

Thank you for the info! I have a buddy who is going K series in his 94 GSR so i am taking everything from him including the cat, so hopefully no problems.
Yea I will check with the REF at evergreen valley. Thank you for the tip!

Finally Home
Finally I got my full swap with all Emission components. Unmolested MY93-94 GSR!
The head has 93 stamped onto it but the VIN is 94 but good enough for me!
Made an appt with the ref for a phone conversation. He said I can use the following items:
I need a carb legal intake manifold, which is ideal cause i do not want a harness made for the butterfly valves anyways on my GSR
He told me NO jumpers whatsoever. I need a harness made from the ecu to the alternator and all sensors in between
That is about it!!

This is true! He told me to make a harness from the ECU to the alternator !
So they allow you to make your own harness, but you can't plug in a jumper?
Isn't plugging in a jumper technically making your own harness?
Isn't plugging in a jumper technically making your own harness?
Did the ref just want the couple of wires that go from the alternator to the ECU to be continuous and not pass through any connector (like a connector of a jumper harness)?
If that's all they are asking for, it kind of make sense assuming everything else can be left on a jumper.
This is to ensure a'' the wiring is wired in and not dummy rigged/lost within the body wiring. They are encouraging tucked bays. Make sure your new harness has all the evap wiring as all the off the shelf mass produced harnesses DO NOT include them and are labeled off road use.
The ref told me i need one made by a company with a reciept showing the application. I mentioned rywire and cjswiring and he told me that those are both high profile companies and would be approved.. Sounds unorthodox but that is straight from him. Right??
I have and do make special request harnesses for bar specific. Majority of what I offer no one wants most of the emission stuff, they just want the car to start and run.
On my personal crx I have all my emissions equipment wired in appropriately and functioning as it should. I dont get hassled when I smog my crx every 2 years. This last April I went to smog with a milspec harness with firewall milspec connector and plate....no issues. I even have a 92+ evap purge solenoid wired in.
