Help with shifting issue please!
For the past 6 months I have felt a rubbing notch when shifting into 3rd gear if I shift quickly into it, but if I wait a couple seconds going from 2nd to 3rd, then it goes in smooth. I went to the track, had some problems shifting hard into 2nd and 4th, so I decided it was time to take me car home and worry about it, as far as needing a new tranny or whatever, after the weekend.
So, I came home Monday, started up my car, and I can't get it into reverse to move it out of the garage. Then I tried other gears and it won't go into 3rd, 4th, or reverse. I'm draining the clutch fluid today in hopes it will help. If it doesn't, do you guys have any other ideas? If not, I'll have to buy a new tranny. Any ideas will help.
By the way, this is for an 1991 MR2 Turbo, but I also have an EG so I figured I'd post. Mechanically, they are pretty much the same anyway. Thanks guys.

I would replace your clutch before replacing the tranny.
Also check all clutch components
Also check all clutch components
You should still inspect it and all clutch components first.
I have seen preasure plates go out in less then 1000 miles.

From what you are saying, the gears go in if the RPMs match right? From what Im getting from your post, Im pretty sure tht the problem is synchros. If its a cluth problem, it wouldnt matter if you waited or not between shifts, it still will scratch.

I am having the same thing happen. 1st, 2nd, and 3rd and stiff going in. If I wait on 2nd and 3rd, they going in smoothly most of the time. If I am stopped, 1st will be kinda stiff. After I put it in once, I can go back and forth from neutral to first and it is very smooth as long as I dont let the clutch out. If I let the clutch out, its stiff again. Possibly the shifter fork? Not really sure what it is. I am going to get in there in a few months anyways to put an LSD and clutch in. I guess Ill know for sure then.
Thanks for all your posts back. After bleeding the clutch fluid, and investigating further any easy fixes, such as master cylinder or slave cylinder, I believe it is the synchros. Because it is notchy and also because it isn't all gears, which would make me believe more that the clutch is bad. But, I will be trying to find a new tranny tomorrow because I want to swap in a good one as soon as possible so I can get some last joyrides in before the winter when it gets garaged.
So, once again, thanks for all your help. If you guys know of a 1991 MR2 Turbo Tranny for sale, or where I can find a good one, let me know, because it looks like that's what I'll have to do.
