Drag Racers: What vehicle do you tow your cars with?
Hey Guys,
I'm looking to purchase a tow vehicle next year so I can tow my car to events without ever worrying if I will make it back home, almost all of this year I used to drive back and fourth to the tracks and most of the time I'd be 2-3 hours away from home with a car full of tools, tires, an uncomfortable ride and mayor damidge to my wallet trying to pay for gas..

I'm looking to tow a 16' flat bed trailer and to have some good tool and tire storage.
So the vehicle is definitely going to have to be a truck of some sort and I think that I already have my mind set on a Ford F-250 Superduty with a V8 turbo diesel.
Now going to events all of the time I have noticed that a lot of people tow with Dodge trucks and especially duallys now around my area here (and yes this is iowa, truck country
) just about all of the dodge truck owners have had mayor problems with their transmissions and such, In fact one of my frineds gets a new transmission put in his truck every year...But anyways guys let me know what you guys tow with and what your experances have been with your tow truck or someone elses that you know about..
I'm looking to get something thats either a 98-2000...
Thanks,
Adi
Hey:
Ford stuff works very well. The Powerstroke is a great motor, and the trannys on those trucks last forever.
I pulled my 3200 lb. Mustang all over the country with a 5.4L 4*4, and it did a good job too, but if you have the means go with the diesel.
Just be aware that diesels run 18 quarts of oil, and the filters are like $15.00. Tires are more expensive on 3/4 and 1 tons too. My mileage with my 02 4wd crew cab diesel pulling my Mustang on an open trailer was about 15mpg.
As with all things...avoid Chrysler corporation products like the plague.
Good Luck
Steve

I've heard a lot about the 94-98 Ford heavy duty automatic truck transmissions. Personally I had a 97 F350 crew, but it wasn't diesel, which sucked, but I never had any trouble. Miles were getting high, so I got a new 2002 F150 Crew Cab and I love it. Wish I could afford the Harley edition, but oh well. I've had no problems pulling with it, and I've got it lowered 4 inches....
My buddy tows his stang with a lightning. KB blower, 125 shot, headers, TC, suspension trash, and ported heads. Throws some E/T drags in the box. If the car breaks down, he just races the truck
I tow with a 97 chevy tahoe...gotta rolll deep
As for the tranny overheating...I haven't towed that much since I got teh SUV, but I'm gonna install a tranny cooler for precuation

03 H2 hummer (just kidding.

It's an 02 F150 Supercrew with the 5.4L engine.
Pull the 16ft flat bed trailer. a bunch of tools, and a 1750 lb car.

I would go with a gas truck but last time I towed my car with my buddies Ford
F-150 with the 5.4 V8 I went through so much gas with that thing, it wasn't even funny plus the rear end was sagging really bad..
So I think that I'm just gona stick to a diesel and maybe even go with a dually but that would probably just be a big waste of money and diesel fuel..

JSPEEDNC: Its good to know that you haven't had any trouble with the transmission in that gas powered truck..
boosted92: A Lightning would definitely be the ultimate car hauler especially with all of them mods...
Paul: Roulin Deep in the 97 tahoe lol ;P I always thought about getting a tahoe but than the gas thing comes into place again and such. Hmmmm maybe I should start thinking about an Excursion or should I say miniature school bus
..martini: An H2 would be very nice just as a tow vehicle
but anyways how do you like your truck? and do you have any problems with sag in the back when you tow?Adi
No one likes the cummins motor? Inline 6 making more torque than the duramax and powerstroke v8's. My dad has an Excusion and a dodge ram and the powerstroke feels faster but the ram can haul anything.

Hey Adi
You better get your car running first. Then worry about what your going to tow it with you sound like this guy I know named KC. Is there something in the water in Des Moines.

The ford f250 is a killer truck to have. I personaly have the Dodge cummings diesal with a 5.9L turbo. I love it, but the ford is so much more comfotable.
The chevy duramax makes a very quiet diesal, but I just dont like it too much.
For me its a toss up between the cummings and the ford f250.

I use "White Lightning"!! A 1988 Chevrolet S-10 p/u with a 2.8 V6 and a trans cooler. It's not all that great on gas and it has a hard time pulling my 92 hatch on a tow dolly through the mountains, but it does the job well. I live in Maryland and to tow to Englishtown I use about 3/4 tank. Not too bad.

I use a 98 F150 V6 (no typo, its a 6 cyl). Works great on fuel economy and enough power to pull @ 90 MPH on the Jersey Turnpike.
I paid $5K for it, its a base model XL and gets the job done. I have a flatbed trailer custom made which I got for $600 ... I use this to tow my 1450 lb racecar CRX, but mainly have towed many friends cars, such as MK IV Supras, RX7s, mustangs, hondas, Oldsmobile cutlass, and so on ... works great.

I've never noticed any sag in the back. Though we do try and keep the tongue weight as low as we can. Are you sure your friends had the tow package, with the stiffer shocks in the back? actually, the F150 did rather nicely. Before, I was using a 4.0l Jeep Cherokee...and that thing didn't do very well. It had enough to pull it, just not quite enough to stop it.

Here is the clearest picture I could find of the truck hauling the car. http://www.fatboyraceworks.com/~ndah...r/DSCF0291.JPG
We have a flatbed truck we tow with. I forget what it is, a ford with a v8 of some type. It runs on gas so its a little pricey to travel to far with it. Its also only a single cab so the ride compartment is tiny. The good thing about it is has a super nice wench on it so I dont ever drive my car on or off....its pulled. That makes life a little easier. I want to sell it maybe and buy and enclosed trailor with the money. But then im *** out of luck with a truck because all the money will be in the trailor.
