Default Ever seen this before? Carnage inside!

I was out doing some spirited driving and hit 3rd gear really hard. Heres the results:

I haven't had time to pull it all apart but Im thinking the clutch disk failed and came through the bell housing.

Clutch was an XTD 6 puck and the car was shifted at ~9200. Maybe these clutches aren't meant for that much RPM? Thoughts?

There's WAY more going on than a simple clutch issue, here. ACT has been doing good work since 1995. They can only handle as much as the user.

I believe he said he's using a xtd. If that's the case I'm not surprised it did something like this. And yes that's bad. Looks like block and tranny case is no good.

WTF! iv heard of this happening but never seen this! dude thats scary! Looks like the pressure plate failed. Bottom block and trans look toasted. Your internals in the block might still be salvaged but that trans is deff done!

Should be able to get another bell housing and keep the trans case, and that ear on the block may be able to be rebuilt with weld. Kind of hard to pass judgment with just an Instagram pic. Impressive carnage though.

The bottom ear is also missing from the block. I think It will need a block and a trans as it lost all the fluid too so I'm assuming its more than the bell housing.

dont feel bad happened to be hitting second gear at the track. Flywheel broke off from crank with clutch still attached to it. It was an ACT flywheel and clutch.

Well isn't XTD the best eBay clutch brand out there? Maybe they will warranty it.

I bought the car with it already installed. Lesson learned about the quality of XTD.

Yikes!
Please let us know what failed. I can't imagine a disc causing that much damage since its fairly small and light compared to the pressure plate and flywheel.

Reminds me of V8 horror stories when clutches blow up and flywheels turn into saw blades and rip through tunnels and take people's feet off.

Racing Beat...or maybe it was Mazdatrix, sold kevlar trans tunnel blankets for the exact same scenario on Wankels that were prepped to spin to 12,000rpm.

I have seen it happen on two occasions... both transmission bell-housings completely destroyed, one block destroyed and one transmission destroyed. Both were XTD clutches with a 6-puc solid disk. The disks separated around the hub center and splayed out wide, carving through the soft aluminum nearby. It appears a quality clutch kit cannot be bought for $135 off E-Bay.

A metal disk spinning at 8000+ rpm has a TON of energy pinpointed onto a small surface area. They most definitely can and do cause damage that are potentially fatal if it hits someone
