<p>I did not know about 'grinder safety'</p><p> </p><p>That being said, I always use the guard for my grinder, but that's usually just to direct sparks. I didn't the RPM of the wheel mattered. Now I'll make sure to buy the right wheels. Thanks for this thread!!!</p><p> </p><p>I do ALWAYS wear my face shield though. My welding hood has a grind mode so it's easy enough to rotate the switch and keep my hood on. </p><p> </p><p>What about wire wheels? I find those to be just as dangerous, as the wires tend to break off and go flying everywhere. </p>
<p>That last pic you posted actually looks like a harbor freight wheel. </p><p> </p><p>I know these are consumables and they're expected to break, but is there a preferred brand vs whatever is cheapest?</p><p> </p><p>I ask because I actually prefer to just go grab HF grinding wheels since they're relatively cheap compared to whatever is at HD or Lowes. </p>

I agree, I have used HF consumables. But recently moved to doing husky or napa grinding wheels. They just ended up lasting twice as long so the price difference didn't matter.
Oh I have both a guarded and un-guarded wiz wheel (air grinder). The un-guarded is only for tight fits, where I can't use the guard. Makes it easier than having to put it back on and forgetting.
Know one guy who was cutting U-bends on a chopsaw for making an exhaust on an integra, the disk exploded and cut his neck open there was blood everywhere but they were close to a hospital so he made it and was ok. Wearing safety glasses is not enough. I wear one of those full shields posted above. The welding hood is just thin plastic and the lense clear cover is just as thin so not sure about using that.
ESSSSHHHHH Post 7 is graphic. I been wanting a full face shield for a while. This might be the last straw to make me finally get one. Thanks for sharing.

Read up on your ANSI z87 standards. If the hood and/or the clear lens is Z87 marked (it should be, unless you are buying bootleg stuff) then it is rated for impact.

<br />I'm going to check this out when I get home. See if the actual welding hood is rated like the lens is.
I wear both a shield and goggles as I have had metal removed form both of my eyes. We should only use really good shields to protect our eyes, I still have a spot on my right eye that is a scar.
Regards
Dave

:vomit: That pic made me wanna go buy a good face shield, a few yards of kevlar fabric, and then sew myself a full-body grinding burka.
Grinding disc's are very predictable. First of all they almost never break unless the resin fiber get cut/worn or the disc is flexed. If you have the disc flexing well your an idiot and deserve to be hit with the disc.
Ive broken about 5 in my life, a few grinding disc's and alot of cutting disc's.
They always break and shatter outwards which is why I say they are predictable.
So if you hold the disc in a way it cant hit you its almost 100% safe. Hits the ground and hits the ceiling. might hit your stupid coworkers but not you
Ive had some violent ones that basically sent disc flying all over the shop. I always wear a full mask when cutting and grinding + glasses.
Even the cheap hf glasses are really good. Ive launched nails with airguns at them and they never crack or break.
digging through my junk for my grinder guard now, took it off to get maximum useage out of the blades, I'm too pretty to lose an eye or mutilate my face. lol
