P1456 is a EVAP leakage code. The fuel cap is the first thing to check. Check the condition of the sealing surface and the rubber gasket on the old cap. Replacing the cap is usually a compulsory first step, and will correct many EVAP leak codes.
However, if the code persists after the code is reset, and a replacement cap is installed, then you have an air leak in the EVAP system somewhere else. This can be the lines from the filler neck to the tank itself, the charcoal canister lines or the rubber lines themselves (prone to rot damage), or the vent valve being clogged with debris, preventing an air tight seal.
A purge valve leak is not likely in this situation because it is a very small leak, but it is also worth checking the condition of the lines and performing a vacuum test on the valve itself as well.
Start with a good physical and mechanical inspection of all the components for the EVAP system. A leak tester may be required to find it if you cannot easily spot a potential point of failure (cracked rubber is a point of failure).

I'm having an issue with the p1456 code on my 2001 Accord with 288k. It's been on for a while now and I've never been able to get to the bottom of the cause. I did replace the canister and 2 way valve (which took care of the previous p1457 code I was getting). The issue I'm having now is there is a pretty good smell of gas vapor, I've also seen some drips in the driveway, the 1456 that I've had on has now gone off. the car is basically un-drivable at this point because the fumes are so bad and it's obviously not safe. There is no correlation between having the tank full or empty and the smell seems to only happen when the vehicle is on. Any help on this would be very much appreciated.
