I have a 91 EF hatch. Just put a fully rebuilt d15b2 in it and turned it on and there's a loud high pitched squealing noise. Thought it was the tensioner so replaced that but it's still making the same noise. Then I thought it could be the alternator belt but I took the alternator off and it's still doing it. Tried tightening and loosening the timing belt but the noise doesn't change. Then I spent 2 hours searching for a vacuum leak but can't find one anywhere. What could this be??

Check that the time belt isn't rubbing against the cover.

Did you try taking off each belt and running it without them. (leaving timing belt on of course)

 

Have you driven it at all?
When you listen to it, does the sound maybe come from the transmission side?

 

Yep, I only have two belts, timing and alternator and I took the whole alternator out and it was still making the same noise. Then I tried to tighten and loosen the timing belt and nothing changed

 

I haven't driven it yet because the axles aren't in, and it's possible but the sound is obnoxiously loud so I can't tell where it's coming from

 

Could be that you installed the clutch wrong.

 

Can you post a video and some pictures?? I know question what sound of squealing it is now. I would assume it was rubber squealing.

 

I found out what it was, I changed the intake manifold gasket and it stopped. Thanks for your help everyone!
