Default B18C OBD 1 or 2 question

Please no flames. The search function is somewhat weak, and I've been looking and cant get a quick answer. SO:

Have an EG hatch and my JDM B18C just took a crap on the dyno. Valve retainer broke and likely valve hit piston. In process of removing head, but likely going to need another B18C. How the hell do you tell if its OBD 1 or 2? I am running a Pherable chiped P28 ECU. Plan on using all my peripherals from the old engine, (header, skunk intake, fuel rail, intake, etc). While looking for used engines I'm getting the OBD 1 or 2 question and I'm ignorant about it.

Help please.

Thanks.

Internally they are very similar, so it really doesn't matter. The OBD-2 engine will have an extra sensor plug (CKF-crank fluctuation sensor) down by the crank pulley that you will ignore. You can use your distributor, fuel injectors, T/B, etc. on the new engine... you might even consider moving the entire intake manifold over just to make life easy. Otherwise, don't sweat it.

The OBD-2 engines may have fewer miles on them since they are newer... finding a '94-95 B18C1 with "low" miles is pretty rare.

Wow, that's it....one sensor? The price difference is significant plus availability is much less for OBD1. I had planned on switching all peripherals including my Skunk intake.

Is there any other sensors or issues I'll have to deal with?

Thanks

No you can either go OBD1 or 2 and swap over your items listed above if they don't match up connector wise.

I put forth the same question to Pherable and they said does not matter, that I should switch over all peripherals especially injectors, alternator, distributor, so that there does not need to be any changes in wiring?

Thanks

Do you need a new block? Are your pistons fucked? Even if they are, youd only need new rings and pistons.. why a whole new block? And obd1 gsr blocks have an oem oil cooler! Lol

During the tune on the last of 7 pulls, it died. Timing had been way off.

Diagnosis: broken spring retainer...so its possible the valve went and hit the piston. I'm in the process of taking the head off to see what's been damaged. The overall opinion is that its easier and cheaper to just get another B18C and transfer my peripherals to it. So I started shopping around and noted that OBD1 blocks are more rare. I wanted to know why and have gotten a better handle on why.

Images of carnage. All was stock B18C. ???? Bad luck, beat up motor? Not sure. Guy doing tuning was pretty upset. Silver lining is I got to take head off, now motor swap.

Yup. When I bought this car, the ***** I bought it from relisted it after I paid him. I had to get an my attorney friend set up a sting. He posed as the new buyer, met the guy at the DMV, and when he asked for his money, he got handed an envelope with receipts. He ran out and had kept an extra set of keys and took off....high speed chase, police involved, threat of jail and the ***** brought it back but had stripped parts off. Cops made him go back for parts, my attorney took position of it. Drove pretty good but I wanted a tune for my area......car went boom.

Luck can only be positive now.
