Icon2 Fuel trouble on 99 to 96 D16y7 Swap

Hey there I am doing an engine swap from a 99 civic to a 96 car. I found most everything I needed on this site, very helpful.

The car i am putting together is just a race car so I don't need any gauges or anything, Just need the car to go.

The engine ran fine in the 99 before I swapped it out now it seems to have some fuel issues, the car runs when I dump gas directly in the intake but will not run on it's own.

The only difference that seems to be between the two engines is the Dizzy plug. So I swapped out the old dizzy plug from the inside of the old dizzy and put it in the one from the 99.

According to this thread the only thing it should effect is the gauges, but there was no clear answer:

https://honda-tech.com/honda-civic-d...ic-dx-2872241/

fuel is getting to the injectors assembly but I am stumped, could what I did to the dizzy have caused a fuel issue?

I have been over this thread a few times:
https://honda-tech.com/hybrid-engine...a-*-*-1972711/

and did the A plug pull out fix:

Still having the fuel issues, Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

If you have to pour gas into your throttle body to get the car started than for sure its not the dizzy. Why not use the dizzy that came with the car?

Hey tony

I am not sure why I decided to use the inside of the dizzy instead of the whole thing. I guess I wanted to change the least amount of things on the 99 motor, did not think it through.

This is my first engine swap and really the first extensive work I have done on a car. I was not sure if there was a sensor in the dizzy that somehow regulated fuel (I don't know if it sound pretty stupid but I don't know enough to completely rule it out)

I understand that you don't need the cluster, but for diagnostic purposes, you do need the CEL light. Can you plug in the cluster just for testing? Have you modified your harness at all? Are you using the 96, or the 99 harness? Stock, or modified ECU? Stock injectors? Have you done a fuel system pressure test?

If giving it fuel directly lets it run, then your problem is in your fueling system, not your ignition system.

using the 96 harness, not modified.
Stock injectors

Have not done a fuel system pressure test but will try it out.

I am pretty sure the ECU is stock but the car was a racecar with a blown engine when it was given to me so there are some unknowns, it does not look like anything was cut or modified or if it was then it should not have effected the basic running of the car. There is no instrument panel in the car, I tried to hook up a diagnostic tool to the computer but it did not work.

My main concern is that it is some sort of sensor that is not rigged up correctly between the 96 and 99 engines, could that be the case?

Thanks for taking the time to post

A code reader not reading is a pretty big problem here. An OBD2 variant car should plug in and read. The fact that it isn't tells us we're diving into a whole can of worms.

Theoretically, the ECU should be in the passenger side kick panel. Can you find it, find the sticker on it, and tell us what the number is? It should be a P2E, but it might be something else.

37820 - p2E -c01 is the code on the computer, looks like it is stock.

Well, that's a good sign, at least. Are the two fuse boxes still there? One should be under the steering wheel to the left, and the other should be under the hood near the battery. Do you have a cluster laying around that you could plug into the dash, for diagnostic purposes?

Hey there

I do have a cluster in the 99 but it will take me a while to get it out. I also took a look to see if I had some fuel pressure by disconnecting the fuel line and turning the car over, no fuel was coming out so I think the narrows it down to a fuel pump or a relay.

I am going to do some more work on it tonight and see what I come up with.

When you turn the key to ON(II), do you hear the fuel pump priming? When you installed the motor, did you connect all grounds, specifically, the thermostat ground?

check to see if you even have a main relay in it, they may have removed it if the car previously had a fuel cell/standalone fuel system

I put in a 99-2000 d16y7 in my 96, only issue was distributor. Everything else was plug and play.

Double check everything fuel related.

Hey thanks for all the suggestions and helping me narrow the problem down.

It turned out to be a bad fuel pump, I swapped it out for the one in the 99 and we are good to go.

Thanks for all your help.

NotARaCist- Tracked down issue because of fuel pressure test.
eghatch9295 - That was a good call on thinking that it might have been a fuel cell, I would not have thought of that.

Cheers
