Icon6 Turbo 1999 Hatch Build

Hello Fellow honda tech viewers today im going to start my build thread for my 1999 Honda Civic DX EJ6 Hatchback 5 Speed The car was 100% stock when I purchased It and has a little over 100k Miles I also bought it from the original owner heres a pic of her when she was stock

100% Stock Grandma Fresh

Stock and Cleanish bay minus the rusting manifold

(Mods Below)
Ex Cluster
Ex Armrest

Since then I have began improving on both the suspension of the car and some OEM interior mods to make to make driving more comfortable and a bit less boring the first mod I did was take apart and swap my old speedo from the DX to and EX cluster so mileage would be the same and with the new EX cluster i would gain the Tachometer and the fuel and engine temp gauges in a familiar location like me last car had ( 1997 EX EJ8).

Heres the EX cluster with the old DX speedometer to keep original mileage

The next thing I couldnt stand was not having an armrest after being spoiled by the EX I had once had so i went in search and in my local pick-a-part I found an 1998 EX EJ8 with the same "Dark Grey" interior and promptly snagged the armrest and mounting bracket for it the install was smooth and after a quick cleanup of the fabric It looked awesome and was very functional for long drives.

You can see my club from the Backseat too

Now comes the Suspension portion of the upgrades

(Mods Below)
Koni Yellow Struts
Blox Lowering Springs
ASR Purple Drank Sub Frame Brace
BWR Rear Lower Control Arms in Purple Because I was stupid and bought them

Heres a Picture of the Konis and Blox together before putting them in the car

Bought these used from craigslist for 300 in 2013 had them on the ej8 and kept them when I sold it. Into the hatch they go.

Next was the Sub Frame Brace and RLCAs this was pretty easy except every bolt broke and needed drilling out it was a PITA but I got it done I had to drive back from school twice to get it finished.

Koni Yellows With Blox Springs and BWR LCAs and ASR Sub Frame Brace

Heres a picture from the Exterior

Thats about All I have completed on the car For Now But the car Like I said in the title is getting turboed.

Heres where the fun starts Ive built other turbo cars but never a honda because it was harder for me to find straight information on how to tune it or run PROPER wiring and or intake manifolds.

Recently My friend let me know this car was for sale locally for 1000$ so I headed over and lone and behold it was a gold mine well to me atleast the car is packed with

2000 DX Motor D16Y7
ACT Clutch
ACT Lightened Flywheel
1995 EX Transmission
1995 EX Intake Manifold
Greddy 15G Turbo Kit
Greddy Intercooler

Greddy Timing Harness for E-Manage
RC310 Injectors

ARP Head Studs
Cometic Head Gasket
Four Point Autopower Rollcage
Spoon Replica Side Mirrors
Shaved Emblems
Pioneer CD Player Head Unit
Black Powdercoat Rota Slipstreams w/ Tires
Steel Wheels w/ Tires

Heres some pictures

Sitting since 2007ish I knew It was still a steal for 1000$

Here You can see the greddy turbo kit, and Mishimoto Rad

Heres the Greddy Emanage and E-01 Piggyback<br/>all Working

The car wouldnt start there so I asked if 900$ would be a fair trade and he agreed so i showed up with a car hauler and took her promptly home

Pushing the car on the trailer was a challenge as it was to low for the trailer and got stuck twice in the middle.

Heres what the car looks like now Ive stripped the turbo and had it sent out to my friend for rebuilding it should be back in about a week and Ive taken to cleaning and refinishing the turbo exhaust manifold and intercooler piping.

Here it is now all I need from it is the oil lines on the back of the block and the intake manifold

The plan is to Swap the entire Kit to the EJ6 I have
Turbo
Manifold
Downpipe
InterCooler and Piping
BOV

I currently also have a p06 Ecu from the EG which will be going into the EJ6 with a OBD2B to OBD1 Adapter This ECU will be chipped and tuned on Chrome Pro when the time Comes from My friend Micah At OST Dyno Tunning in Butler PA

The Only issues I'm having is

1 I need a new intake Manifold The Stock d16y7 IM is incompatible an not built for the turbo application, so i will be swapping my a d16y8 IM. Ive looked into this but there seems to be no clean solution since im in a 1999 and need to jump to OBD1 Which Version I should used either the Manual or Auto Manifold. But I do know I don't want a 99-00 Manifold as it has the extra holes for the cold start assist and Its just more work. If anyone could provide insight on which manifold Auto or manual will be the best option that would be amazing and appreciated

2 is Injectors I have SL2 310s from the old EG and will be reusing them with adapter harnesses just wanted to know if there is anything else I had to do

3. Oil feed lines on the rear of the block on the old EG it looks like there is an oil feed line for the turbo this line is located above the oil filter and look like it is on the area where the oil pressure sensor is is this ok to do and should i do it again on mu new block it looks like i have all the pieces to do it just wanted to know if it was right,

Thanks Guys I will be updating every couple Days with more info And pics.

Update Number 2

Today I did some research and for oil lines I will be going with an oil filter sandwich plate. Also I looked into mounting my intercooler and ran into some issues on reusing the EG kit i had my car possesses no hole in the left hand corner for the pipe to go through so instead of buying a new intercooler kit im going to drill the hole myself there is already a mark for it and the circle is pressed shouldn't be to hard. Also Today ordered my Injector jumpers, Obd2b to Obd1 harness, and oil filter sandwich with some fittings I needed.

Parts ordered
Harness for ECU
Injector Harness
Oil Filter Sandwich
Oil Line fittings
Exhaust manifold Gasket

Today I also spent some time and painted the exhaust manifold for the turbo a nice grey color.

Steps taken were 1. Wire wheel off the rust 2. Sandpaper wheel it smoother 3 Primer 4 Paint

This is after getting sanded down with all the heavy rust off

after its first coat of paint

Also heres the finished downpipe and parts horde p06 ECU some couplers and a new oil line

Here is also the newest problem Ive had Like I said Earlier there is no hole in the body underneath the intake air box for The intercooler piping to go has anyone else cut the hole before or should i just spend the money to buy the right kit?

I highlighted where the Circle is pressed into the metal I assume if cutout it would be identical to the EG hole

Also I will now be staying with the d16y7 Intake manifold since my goal is 5.5lbs of boost on the greddy kit I dont think its necessary at this point but when I come across One cheaper I will make the upgrade also if anyone has any more info on the swap let me know :

Just Got informed the Turbo Should be done late today and hopefully will be ready for pickup here it is before restoring. Ill Update with new Pics as soon as I get it back

Before of the TD04H-15G

Cold Side

Hot Side OIL

Heres how the car sits tonight Thanks Guys if You have any info it would be greatly appreciated also if there is anything else I need to know about going from obd2 to obd1 please let me know thanks

Update #3

Not a big update today but when and finally picked up the turbo from my buddy who did an amazing job you would never guess it was the same turbo it looks so amazing all parts such as manifold and casing were sandblasted and painted with heat treated paint.

Before

After

Hot Side complete with new internals from a Volvo Turbo

Cold side with new waste gate looking beautiful.

Also Will be going with some new parts for the motor to fool proof it hopefully for 5.5psi

ARP head studs
Cometic Head gasket

If anyone knows if these are necessary let me know im going to buy them to be safe.

arp head studs are necessary, they are always necessary.

edit: Nice find btw, those greddy kits are hard to find now a days. I really wish I could find one for my D. Or just start the project of swapping in a b20 auto and not have to worry about having a hard time climbing hills.

You are totally fine to drill a hole by the intake. Ex civics come with a hole there stock. Been thinking about drilling that out myself for an icebox set up.

What a difference! Arp is a most as stated, but you'll be fine with with an OEM y8 gasket

Thanks I love the greddy kit too I bought it to kinda preserve it and make it really clean I feel they will all be gone in about 5 - 10 years. And a b20 would help with the hills

Now Ive done a headgasket before on a previous car but why should I buy the Y8 gasket compared to the Y7 or should I just spend the money on Cometic? Any insight would be wonderful and does anyone know if there is a guide on how to install headstuds?

Download helms manual for the order of tightening sequence the manufacturer torque specs.

If you're not doing it big, get the stock headgasket for your motor.

Update #4

Spent My three day weekend of freedom picking up some more parts for the Honda drove my turbo Miata to Summit Racing in Ohio to pick up the head-studs and some other goodies.

Picked up

Oil fittings
ARP Head studs
Dayco Timing belt kit with tensioner
GMB water pump NEW

Also went to my local dealer and bought and OEM Y7 gasket which will be here soon.

Here's some pictures.

Timeing Belt and Water Pump

ARP !!

Called Black works and found the oil plate sandwich is 3AN and my turbo has 6AN lines so I bought the Adapter Fitting

Picked up a 90 Degree Coupler so i can temporarily use the Y7 manifold

Heres a pic of the miata too if anyones interested

Same Greddy kit as the Civic its the exact TD04H-15g turbo

Should be ready To dig into the motor this upcoming weekend

Also does anyone know if d series header flanges are different angles when connecting to the cat or exhaust (the first flange is on an angle) some guy keeps trying to tell me obd1 and obd2 are different.

Thanks so much and i'm actually an all motor fan too but I found this kit so cheap I couldn't pass. My original goal was a b16b for this car.

Update #5

I spent money on something frivolous but I couldnt pass them up for the price for 400$ and my seats I got a perfect condition set of OEM ITR Recaro SRD seats they have no rips besides a small tiny one on the outside of the drivers side they could use a light cleaning but are perfect I double checked they are real they possess the brown and black striped bottom along with saying Recaro GYMB & CO and also say Recaro on the side clips.

Heres some pictures

Turbo will be going on this weekend for those following the build!

Y7 and y8 HG are the same, point was to stay OEM, you don't need the cometic.

Nice grab with the seats. And dam good deal

What are you talking about your tripping extra hard . look bro a cosmetic head gasket is good and the timing belt and water pump is good also look into a better oil pump as well and ARP rod bolts as well too and you be good for 12psi I did this exact same setup back in 2004

Where did I say the COMETIC not cosmetic gasket was no good? OEM HG has been proven to fine with higher hp builds. And it's cheaper bro!
What kind of oil pump do you suggest?? What's wrong with a ported OEM pump?

I been hearing off and on things about cometic... allegedly if the mating surfaces are machined to the proper surface finish requirements it'll seal perfect but the OEM one can accept 'less than perfect' surfaces...

this is all speculation... i run an oem gasket on my b20 so...

A cometic head gasket is a good head gasket I used one and it worked great only reason it said cosmetic is cause of spell check smart guy and modding your OEM oil pump is ok I was saying to do something about the oil pump don't just leave it on untouched. I see ur a idiot
