So went to do the initial fire on a built b16 yesterday and all i got was rapid clicking from the starter solenoid. Double checked all grounds, and swapped a known good battery out of the rsx. Same thing happened. Messed with connections again made sure they were all tight and got it to crank fine and fire. did a 20 minute break in and checked for leaks, went to start it again and same rapid clicking from the solenoid.

Bought a new battery because it needed one regardless, double checked all grounds, grounded the thermostat ground directly to battery negative just to be sure. if you run a jumper wire to the starter it still just clicks the solenoid like a machine gun. One time a relay by the ECU clicked repeatedly aswell. (main relay?) Yesterday i rotated the motor and it would sound like the bendix arm shot back into place which leads me to think its engaging but not cranking the motor.

All this leads me to think there are connection issues but i have gone over all grounds, trans, valve cover, and thermostat. Is the starter bad if you run a jumper and it still clicks repeatedly? solenoid shot? main relay needs replaced? pump primes gauges/radio everything works/fuses okay. car runs great when it turns over.

any insight would be appreciated, thanks.

 

What kind of voltage are you getting from the starter?

 

pulled starter and bench tested it, everything was fine

problem seemed to have subsided for now. i pulled all grounds again and reconnected them. doesnt make sense why it didnt work the other three times i did that. hoping there isnt a short in the harness somewhere.
