Clutch and/or engine acting wierd
It's an 06 EX R18 with a manual. I had the clutch replaced at 150k. It now has a little over 166k. The clutch that went in was not the stock clutch. Its an EXEDY clutch, it think it's a racing clutch but not sure. It grabs REALLY hard! Somtimes is jerky when shifting gears up/down. ITS DRIVING ME CRAZY! What could be some causes of these symtoms? Only other work done on her in the last months was all engine mounts were replaced, including torque rod on front passenger side, and one back by tranny. Anybody having the same problems that have the same year of car? Any help appreciated.
if it is an unsprung/race sprung clutch, and racing material, you will just have to deal with it. They are rated for racing for a reason and not recommended for street use. They are made to hold power and quick shifting in racing environments. It will be heavy to drive every day and will make noise and be very jerky until it wears out. the only way to offset some of the roughness is to really drag the clutch and keep rpms up on roll out and shift quick or drag the clutch on gear changes. This will severely shorten the life of the clutch as a result.
Which exedy clutch did you get ? Did you get a puck clutch of a full face. Also if it's the heavy duty one its normal to have quick bite because that's what it was designed for.
I guess I'm just not used to it, I just hope it doesn't also cause engine mount problems, already been having lots of probs with those. the clutch has short travel and catches quickly. Here's a link to the one I had installed:
I have noticed about the higher rpm shifts are a little bit smoother. Drives me nuts in stop and go traffic which is terrible where I live lol. But say I'm shifting about 5 or 6 rpms... isn't that bad for the R18?
i am not familiar with a "custom OEM" clutch... not that I'm claiming to be a clutch pro, 5k rpm does sound high tho for it to be a "OEM spec" maybe someone with more experience can chime in on that.
Motor mount fade however is normal for most stock honda motors, my r18's mounts got mushy around 60k ish. I just installed a motor stabilizer rather than the pain of swaping the bushings.
(PLEAS NOTE: adding a motor stablizer or earthen bushings transfers ALL motor vibration to the chassis.)
Mushy mounts are mainly attributed to the classic idle-vibration or slamming the garbage out of the motor on the track, if you are shifting smooth it wont do much harm to the mounts. And yeah, some people don't do custom clutch cus its a pain in a dailey driven car in the city.
As far as high rpms being bad? Its fine, the car sits at 3k doing 70mph. Rpm's do not offend honda motors.

I had an Inetgra with the non vtec motor, clutch was short travel and touchy in that car too but it didn't grab near as hard as this clutch does. Couldn't afford the $350 for the honda clutch is only reason i got this one. Get what you pay for right? lol Other reason i never would shift at higher rpms was i didn't know if that would cause more frequent valve adjustments driving it like that, could be wrong, not sure. This is my first Civic, had 2 older Accords before this one. Never had a problem with either of them. My first civic and having all kinds of problems with it.
