Default Main shaft problem, too long?

Hey everyone,

I’m having a problem reassembling my transmission. The basic rundown is a B16 that I’ve installed a Type R LSD and 4.4FD from a USDM Integra Type R. The diff install went pretty smooth; I installed new ball bearing diff bearings in place of the tapper roller bearings and the diff clearance is in spec when the case is bolted down and it spins nice and smooth.

I installed the Type R 4.4FD with a Type R first gear, shim, and needle bearings. The rest of the stack is made up from the B16 parts. I installed the counter shaft into the case and it spins freely with the diff and final drive when the case is bolted down.

The main shaft is basically the B16 main shaft, I’m pretty sure that I didn’t change anything except for a syncro and a few syncro springs. When I install the main shaft into the case the assembly spins freely and meshes with the counter shaft HOWEVER when I bolt the case halves together everything binds up. I went ahead and tried reinstalling everything this time I left out the main shaft washer (the one that goes with the spring washer) and everything worked well. This led me to believe that the main shaft was shimmed incorrectly causing everything to bind when bolted down. No problem, I’ll re-shim the main shaft. I started with taking the measurement from the clutch hosing to the main shaft bearing (measurement C in the FSM) I came up with 0.21mm. I then loaded all of the required hubs/spacers onto the main shaft (including the main shaft washer) and placed it in the case (without the 72mm shim) but my measurement was really small 1.03mm? If you do the math you end up with a 0.31mm shim which doesn’t even exist.

I noticed when building the main shaft that I didn’t need to press anything, everything just sort of fell into place leading me to believe that I got something mixed up…..has anybody every had something like this happen when trying to build a semi-hybrid trans like this? Common things on the main shaft that maybe too long? Maybe something is upside down (I checked, double and triple checked)? Thoughts? More info? Help 

Do you have pictures? Have you checked that the input shaft bearing seated all the way down into the clutch housing?

Something is not assembled correctly. A synchro and springs won't change anything to require reshimming. If you have the FSM, confirm the hub orientation is as the diagrams show.

Hey everyone,

Sorry for the late update, got called away for work. The problem was that I had the 5th and reverse synchro mixed up. All good now, spins nicely and bench shifts just fine
