97 Accord LX 4 cyl - F22B2

Radiator fan quit working so it was replaced with a new one that plugged right up (no cutting wires or splicing). The problem is that now, the new radiator fan only comes on when the A/C is on. I can be idling in hot weather and the radiator fan will not come on unless the A/C compressor is on. Usually I have the A/C on anyway so its not a problem, but sometimes I don't and it starts to overheat. Any clue as to what could be causing this?

 

You may have a bad coolant switch. One of the coolant temp sensors is what turns the fan off and on. If it is not work in properly then you won't have proper fan operation.

 

Likely it will be thermo switch A. Turn the ignition to on without starting the car, unplug the connector for the switch at the thermostat housing and stick a paperclip in the connector. If the fans turn on it's that switch that's bad. Only get it from Honda.

 

I just wanted to be sure BOTH fans are running? "Holmes" asked about both but it was a bit hidden.

 

Sorry for the late reply, life's been keeping me busy. I tested thermo switch A with a paperclip with the key on (but not started) and both fans DID come on. So I replaced switch A, but to no avail. The radiator fan still refuses to come on if the A/C compressor isn't on (and I've let it get well above the half mark on the gauge, so it's been hot enough that it should've came on by itself).
Basically:
A/C on= both fans running
A/C off= no fans running at all
