Hey guys, back with another question with my del Sol. It seems like every now and then (maybe 1/5 times) I'll get this weird no start/intermittent start issue. The engine will crank, but as soon as it starts it dies. If I start it and give it some gas it'll idle a little rough for a bit, but then eventually even out (third try in the video). I had this happen about a year ago, and I thought it was due to the head gasket. I've since had that repaired, and now it's doing it again. Interestingly, it only seems to happen when it's hot outside. I've replaced the main relay, but with a refurb (not sure if that matters). I did check fuel pressure, and that looks good. I also had a compression test performed, and that was also good. I'm just looking to see if anyone can diagnose the issue. Thanks for looking.

Start with basic maintenance items like spark plugs Wires cap and rotor. Make sure your idle air control valve is clean and the throttle body unit itself is clean as well.

You may also want to run a fuel system cleaner in your gas tank, my favorite is 6 ounces of marvel mystery oil added to the gas tank or try seafoam. It could be a sticky injector or leaky injector as well

 

Add year and engine information to your post.

Have you checked for spark and for the fuel pump priming when the engine will not start? Any CEL codes?

 

Sorry, more info. It's a 94, with a B16a. No CEL light. Here's what I've done so far:

New distributor cap and rotor
New wires
New timing belt
Verified spark with plug tester

I do use fuel injector cleaner. I've been adding it more recently during fill ups. Also, I do hear the pump priming. I checked the pressure with a tester, and it was good. From what you guys are saying though, it sounds fuel related.

 

Actually, I did not check for the fuel pump priming during no starts.. Is it possible to have faulty fuel pump? When I tested the pressure, it was good. Do you think I just might have caught it on a good day?

 

Takes literally 2 seconds to listen for the fuel pump.

 

I guess since I did check the pressure and it was good, I didn't think I needed to listen for the pump priming. I will be sure to do that next time it happens though, thank you.

What do you think though? Looks like fuel? Possibly pump or injectors like chrysler kid said?

 

You need to gather basic no-start diagnostic information (fuel & spark; CEL codes) when the engine will not start. Otherwise, you are forcing members to guess, which is unproductive.

Try the ignition switch. It's on the left side of the steering column, opposite the key. I's a white plastic node attatched to two black wires. You need to remove some plastic paneling to get to it, but it's a piece that actually has a recall on it for some years. Call Honda and give them your VIN number to see if you have any recalls. But if not, the part may still be faulty.

 

A possible sporatic starting issue is when the capacitors on the ECU get effected by moisture and heat over time. The capacitors that effect the fuel pump priming circuit are the specific problem. Del Sols especially get humid due to the targa top. During rainy weather the problem is more common. Eventually the capacitors will totally fail and then you won't hear the fuel pump prime at all. You may need a replacement ECU which would be a P30.
They are hard to find. You can get a P28 chipped for a B motor if you need it.
