Ok Honda experts I have a 1998 Accord 3.1 with a 4 speed automatic transmission in it that went out. I had a friend give me a new rebuilt 5 speed tranny out of a 01 Acura TL 3.2 V6. I would like to put the 5 speed in the 98 Accord. Is this possible and what do I need to do?

 

not 100% sure on some of this but:

Mechanically it will mount up to the J30A1 and drop right in...
**I know this for a fact, 100%, it will mount up and drop right in.


Electronically, it may not work 100%. The J30A1 ECU most likely will not completely run that 5-speed auto. It's set up to run a 4 speed, not a 5 speed.

Could you use a ECU for a 5-speed auto? -- maybe. But, then you will need the engine harness from a 3.2 or 3.5 litre. J30A1 has no knock sensor, the 3.2 and 3.5 litre engines do have a knock sensor...so you may run into issues there?

 

Hey Thanks for the input! I figured more people would have replied to this? Its good to know that It will at least bolt up. I was thinking getting a Shifter, ECU, And Harness from a 2001 Acura TL If I can get them parts cheep enough at a salvage yard I guess I will soon find out what kind of mess it will turn into?
