Please post pics of the Jaguar XJ220R that was at Summit!
I didn't have a camera with me, so for everyone who's never seen a car like this, being raced with only 350 miles (420-something km, actually) on the odometer, with some ridiculous amount of horsepower (rumored at ~1000) - a true exotic!
funny you should mention this Adam, I just finished uploading my pics to we-todd-did.
most of the pics didnt turn out, because my camera focus sucks *** in low light (only got pics in the pm bb race) none of my pics of corey battling with shugg turned out either.

I talked with the driver for a couple minutes (very nice guy btw)
This particular car is an XJ220-R, was the 3rd XJ220 made, and was the backup XJ220 at LeMans. (in 94 IIRC)
Simply amazing. I wish I got more pics.
anybody know what kind of laps it ran? I know it ran 1:19s on saturday on street tires, with the driver still learning the car. I wonder what it did on sunday with 335 hoosiers?

I heard he was running 1:17s. WOW. Pretty awesome watching those 3 foot flames shoot out the exhaust on every upshift!
I don't know how the Porsche was keeping up - a GT2 is fast, for sure, but he was really doing well against the Jag. Great racing to watch - especially when they had to thread through the 944 Cup cars that were on track at the same time.
I can't imagine how scary it must be to be driving a N/A 944 doing maybe 125-130 top end and have these cars go by at 185...

I once shared Road Atlanta with a Ferrari 333sp. It was a test day.
Went a little something like this...
1. Scott exits turn 7 on to the back straight. Nothing behind him.
2. Scott crests the hill, checks mirrors, still nothing there.
3. Scott starts to turn in at the black flag station (turn 9), Doing about 128mph, hears a strange noise behind him.
4. Scott checks mirrors. Something red.
5. 333 passes on inside before the dip (yes, this was back in the "gravity cavity" days.
6. Scott nails turn 11, flatfoots turn 12... 333 is already through turn 1 and up the hill.
That, my friends, was an eye opener. Basically he went from turn 7 to turn 1 in the same amount of time it took me to go from halfway down the backstraight to turn 12.
This was not a pro driver. Just some incredibly rich guy that bought this car for kicks. He also had a 66(?) Daytona. Just for kicks.
Towing his stuff around in an 18 wheeler, you know, for kicks.
That was a sobering day in many ways.

Some info on that car, and the race....
The car was driven by Ted Hulse. Those who have been around NASA-VA for any length of time know him and his tube frame Porsche 993 twin turbo. However this one was NOT his car, it was his friend's!
The car qualified and raced (on Hoosiers) consistently in the 1:20 range. I believe his best lap of the weekend was a 1:20.2x
As for the Porsche, it is a Speed Cup car, and was driven VERY well. He actually out qualified the Jag, but the 1000hp (you read that correctly) launched him into the lead at the start, and those the Porsche was faster in some places, he couldn't get past the Jag. Even if he could, the Jag would have taken him back again on the straight....
For the record, that car is capable of much better lap times than it ran! It should have been doing about 1:15s or so.

There was a good bit of debate regarding how well the Jag was actually driven. Sunday's race saw the GT2 and Jag battling but Saturday, both cars had their hands full with a lowly AIX Mustang that was continually, lap after lap beating the **** out of those 2 cars. Finally coming out of 10 on the last lap George decided to run through the grass in the Jag to take the win (by less than a carlength) over the Mustang. The Porsche had nothing for the Mustang (who was turning consistent 1:24s in the race).
Just to add, the yellow Speedvision 993 was on full race slicks (Pirellies) on Sun. He was on Toyo street tires on Sat, plus had some problems with the graveltrap on Sat during practice....
Slicks really helped him to eat the Jag alive in the Carosel and infield. I watched the whole race on Sat from Turn 3 and the whole race on Sun from the turn 4-5 bleachers going down the chute.
and yes, the flames were cool at dusk!!!
Todd
PS the 993 appeared to be much better driven (smoother lines, better application of brakes and throttle) than the Jag. The Jag completely outclassed him, though. It was the coolest car I have ever seen at a race personally. Even cooler than the 4 Ferrari 333SPs up at the Glen earlier this year.

Funny thing, he was almost not let out on track because grid could not find the roll cage. After some debate, the driver realized it was actually built into the car
Also, it is a million dollar car, he certainly was not pushing it in the turns and was capable of much faster times. Whenever there was traffic in a corner the driver would almnost come to a complete stop and let everyone by.
The 911 was driven amazingly well, bottom line.

but the 1000hp (you read that correctly)
Where did that figure come from? The XJ220 is facotry rated at 542 horsepower, 475 lb-ft of torque.

It was built by Tom Walkinshaw (the owner of the Arrows F1 team).
I am not sure if this link is truthful (watch for pop-up ads)
http://www.supercars.net/cars/1993@$...0C%20TWRg.html
The XJ220R has 630 - 1000 hp depending on how much boost you dial in along with other tuning settings... that's what I was told by the driver...
SCCA GT1 record is 1:17 or so.
http://www.wdcr-scca.org/results/res...dex.htm?020108
Claude Saffer has run 1:16s there and his car is pretty out-dated technology at this point (but he is one helluva driver).
What about that Porsche that was keeping up w/him? What do we know about that car and why it was able to keep up?
That looks a lot like Gennady Soykher's 993-based Speed World Challenge GT racecar.
On the dyno at EIP
en route to 12th place finish @ WDC Speed GT race 7/20/02
technical specs for the car ... 380hp, 2660 pounds.
Hope that helps,
Jon
