Really odd problem, Temp guage reads half way when I turn on car even when it's cold.
1995 Civic 4 door 5speed (USA)
Really interesting problem.
Car is cold
Put key in 2nd position gauge goes from resting on the bottom to half way.
As car warms up gauge then goes up to the top and stays
Almost as if the gauge if offset 50 % from normal
Unplug temp sensor under distributer
Reset ignition back to 2nd position
Gauge goes from rest to half way
Thoughts?

Pardon my ignorance, is the temp sending unit the one wire under the distributer connected to a unit screwed into the block?
If it is I unplugged it
The gauge goes from rest to half way when turning on the car with this connector unplugged. ( check engine light as well but that is expected since it was unplugged.)
I appreciate your fast reply earlier

I made a mistake. I thought I was unplugging the sending unit but I was unplugging the other sensor next to it. I went ahead and unplugged the actual sending unit and the gauge went back to rest. I'm assuming the unit is bad. I went ahead and ordered a new one Part# 37750-PH2-014.
Quick questions:
When I install the new sending unit do I need to put anything on the threads (Teflon tape or high temp gasket)?
Will coolant spill out from the hole, I assume it will but just curious if it's not the case.
Again thank you to everyone for their help and a Big thank you to RonJ for your quick replies!

yes coolant will spill out, and yes I believe you should put the teflon tape onto the new coolant sensor. Have a good look at the wire aswell while its out if it is shorting out somewhere it could be the reason you are getting the false reading
