Default y7 tranny prolly not too healthy

i think i should expedite my savings for purchasing & rebuilding a y8 tranny

i always knew i wanted a y8 tranny but after this i think i need to get it done already

just replaced the clutch, flywheel, pressure plate, pilot and throw-out bearing. currently in the breaking-in process. anyways, i knew i should have replaced the axle seals but didn't. was worried theyd leak. constantly been looking under car to see it leaking but it appears to be holding

i drained the less-than-week-old tranny fluid today to see how much was left (to see if it was leaking) and to my surprise it's not clear anymore. it's looking black already, and it was looking extra metallically. so i'm guessing the debris magnet is at it's capacity. but i don't think it's leaking because there was about 1900 ml of fluid in my drain pan. (i emptied 2 bran-new quarts of honda mtf in it the other day)

should there be any gap inbetween the axle head and transmission?

check this tranny fluid:

i think i'm hearing my isb again but it's not nearly as bad as it was a year ago. today on my drive home from work it wasn't really making any noise. but yesterday it was. but tbh it shifts into all gears fine and it doesn't seem like the tranny is in bad shape. but i guess i'll never know til i split er apart

other than a local self serve junk yard, where's a good place to get a used y8 tranny? craigslist? i plan on rebuilding it in my basement while i use the y7 tranny. all bearings and syncros, maybe some forks if need-be... any suggestions?

feed me some juciy information, h-t.

So let me ask you, when you first dropped the tranny to replace the clutch did the oil look the same as you are seeiing it now?

it looked worse. but i didn't think anything of it because it had been over a year since the last time i changed it. without splitting the tranny and cleaning it what's the best way to 'flush' a tranny

Crack open the transmission and clean the magnet.

With the transmission out and open, replace the axle seals and the input shaft bearing, if suspect.

should there be any gap inbetween the axle head and transmission?
Yes, about 1/8" or so.
