00 Civic DX - Need advice on replacing damaged exhaust
Hey guys so last week I accidentally ran over a median and damaged my exhaust line on my 2000 Civic DX (opps dont ask how this happened). I split the front exhaust like this.
The replacement i was going to order was like $60 and came with the nuts, bolts and what not to install it.
Now I see on eBay there are some entire cat back exhaust systems for $90+. if i went and got an entire new system do i still need that front exhaust piece or does the cat back exhaust not hook up to that. Instead of paying around 60 for the part I want, if i can get an entire catback system for a bit more i figure i might as well go for it. Thanks!
EDIT THE CAR IS A DX MODEL NOT EX

re: 00 Civic DX - Need advice on replacing damaged exhaust
Its a piece that goes between the mid pipe and i believe the catalytic converter? I dont know cars to well. This is the picture of what i was going to order.
re: 00 Civic DX - Need advice on replacing damaged exhaust
Im assuming its part number 4 in this diagram? if so I'm not even sure of the part I was looking to order is correct as it looks like there would need to be a casing for it too? I'm so confussed.
re: 00 Civic DX - Need advice on replacing damaged exhaust
From that pic it looks like it just spit open the cat's heat shield and snapped the pipe near the rear of the cat converter. Seems like you could take it to a muffler shop and have a coupler welded in to fix it..just my guess.
Take some better pics with references to where the broken pipe is located in comparison to the engine and the entire exhaust line.
re: 00 Civic DX - Need advice on replacing damaged exhaust
Most kits come as shown here. Without the down pipe. Just did a quick search and there are a few listing for just the oem down pipe on ebay. There are also listing for the full exhast kit but I cannot say if it is any count.
you could always get it welded but I probably wont last.
re: 00 Civic DX - Need advice on replacing damaged exhaust
Okay hopefully this picture will help. Taken from just infront of the passengers side tire.
The cracked piece that goes up into the engine is what has me confused. All the cat back exhausts that i am seeing online that are supposed to fit my model car (2000 ex 2 door coupe) only have three pieces: The muffler section, the bent section that makes a sort of S shape and the last piece is the long straight one with the resonator. In the picture I have labeled the "joint" which seems to be a forth piece after the joint is where this piece has split open. the piece then runs into the engine
So are the three piece catbacks im seeing on amazon and eBay just longer in the piece that has the resonator with it? or are they shorter and are supposed to connect to the catalytic converter on the other civic models when it is actually under the car and on the EX model you just need to have this fourth piece? The post above mine references a "down pipe" is that what my fourth piece is called? I dont think a down pipe and a test pipe are the same? I though i read somewhere that test pipes arent legal as they are used in place of the cat converter but in the EX model the cat converter is up towards the engine?
Ultimately I would like to get a cat back system that comes with everything to hook up under the car, it would need to include a piece equivalent to the piece i have broken. Id rather pay $100 something and get the whole catback system instead of spending $60 for the one part.
Hopefully im not confusing you guys cause i know i am sure confused. Again all help is much appreciated! c:

This is what I found on ebay. Looks like an aftermarket down pipe. Buy if you search ebay for 2000 civic oem down pipe it will help you I think.
On the picture (my last post)above on the bottom left is a rusted piece of pipe with a wire hanging out. That is the cat. Which bolts to the beginning of the 4 new exhaust pipes, which bolts to the down pipe.
Down pipe and test pipe are different. Test pipe takes the place of the cat on custom exhaust.
re: 00 Civic DX - Need advice on replacing damaged exhaust
It looks like your exhaust doesn't have a catback but, it should if it was stock with a D16Y8.Either someone replaced the cat wih a test pipe and left it that way or at some point a prior owner put on a cat forward (part of manifold) exhaust. Please take pics of manifold top and bottom. If that is the case you would be much better off buying a full or partial (cat-back include plus extension) to match up to a good section of the existing pipe. If you see a bee hive looking piece attached (welded) to the bottom of the manifold then that is not the stock exhaust ... that type came on all models except EX and Si.
A cat back (part# 5) would bolt-on front and rear like in the diagram posted by Brisingr. Your exhaust doesn't seem to to that.
Also check to make sure your engine is a D16Y8 and head w/ Vtec solenoid. Who knows.. the engine might have been swapped ?

I've somehow managed to screw up everything ive posted and bought so far haha. I HAVE A DX MODEL. So my cat converter is attached to my manifold. I did purchase the frontal exhaust part that one of the user listed above ( i cant see this that post while im posting this one so not sure who posted it) and i also did purchase a catback system (2 actually both somehow managed to both times order ones that were only ex compatible and then realized it later ((guess im not too good at reading descriptions)) ) one of the systems i bought i contacted the seller and they refunded me the money but still sent the product so who knows? I might still get it but it wont be compatible since its for EX. opps.
Added edit: So can i just take the exhaust system that i think is shipping to me (that i got a refund for making it free c: ) and just buy part number MHF-CV92 and everything would work out?? If so ill be pretty excited. Alsowould that drop pipei already bought work insteadof buying part MHF-CV92?

re: 00 Civic DX - Need advice on replacing damaged exhaust
The easiest way to fix your problem---take car to muffler shop and have them cut/weld in a section where your crack is. Takes 5 mins, and is a $2 coupler. Most shops will let you out for $20 or less b/c its literally a 5 minute job.
If you start trying to Frankenstein your exhaust, you may end up ordering a couple more parts. The issue your going to run into is the exhaust isn't going to line up near the motor b/c the dx/lx model has the cat conv off the manifold, and the ex had the cat conv down stream a bit.

Took it to two separate shops. Each was going to charge me over 200 which i could tell was absolutely ridiculous.
re: 00 Civic DX - Need advice on replacing damaged exhaust
So im seeing the test pipes are 16.5 inches and the oem part is 22 inches long so im not sure if the aftermarket catbacks make up for the difference or not. Im thinking im probably just gonna hav to use the oem piping i bought and just call it quits :c

If you intend on keeping the car for a while then you would be better off converting it to a cat-back. However, you will have to purchase either a new or used (EX compatible) manifold OR headers (Ebay cheapest route). If you get a new manifold you will need to order the pipe that connects from the manifold to the cat converter. If you buy headers they should bolt up (top) to engine and (bottom) to cat converter. Also, try to find headers that have the pre and post o2 sensor bungs holes (lol..bungs-holes).
Only other issue is if your current o2 sensor wiring is long enough to match up with the cat back type o2 sensor locations. The cat back design is better as the manifold is less likely to crack and has less heat and noise in the engine bay. I think, but not sure, that headers are even less likely to crack than a manifold.
re: 00 Civic DX - Need advice on replacing damaged exhaust
If you intend on keeping it replace all with a new aftermarket system. Worth it completely if you want to keep your ride. You can pick them up cheap on ebay as a set or separately. IMO I would buy something more expensive, also I would just remove the cat. (decat all they way) All depends how much you have to spend and again do you want to keep your ride.
