I have a '91 Accord, the newest one in my fleet. My past Accords all have a mechanical speedometer cable. This is my first experience with the speed sensor. Neither my speedometer nor my odometer work at present. Is the speed sensor the likely culprit to look at? Is there a test that can check whether it is functional or not? I would appreciate any thoughts from those who are more experienced than I am with this equipment. Thanks!

 

I had a '90 DX Accord that had the same problem - in addition to that problem, it ran horribly - stalling at red lights, etc...

I replaced the VSS (got one for about $15 at my local salvage yard) and not only did it fix the speedometer, odometer, and tachometer - it also cleared up the horrible performance.

there are other similar posts regarding the VSS and replacement instructions - simple search will do you wonders...

As far as tests go - an electrical test is probably the best bet and I'm sure there is some way to check continuity for operation....anyone want to offer any tips on testing the VSS?

 

The test is if cruise control doesn't work its the VSS, if it does then its the electrics powering the speedometer. You can buy a replacement speedo and just swap the pcb on the back if indeed that is the problem. The only way I can think of testing the VSS is with an oscilloscope and those are neither cheap nor common.

 

...unless it's like my '90 accord was - it didn't have cruise control...
