How old is the battery? They usually only last 3-5 years. How often, or ever, did you replenish the liquid in the battery? Unless it's sealed, batteries need periodic replenishment of either water or battery acid.
Regardless of any of that, you smoked the battery (literally. lol). It happens and has happened to most people. When you go get a new one ask them to show you where and how to replenish the liquid.
