Default 2001 civic lx 4 door info.

Hello, I have a few questions about my girlfriends 2001 civic lx 5 speed 4dr. First of all.. what engine is in it? is it the same engines the EX's had minus the Vtec? How hard would it be to put the vtec system on it? Is it just a different head design? From the best i can tell the bottom end of the 2 motors are the same. Also. What kind of things can be done to this motor to wake it up a little. She would eventally like to have a 4 door sleeper, but she doesnt want to spend a ton of money doing it. Any sugesstions are welcome
Thanks

Dr.

I believe the lx has the D17A1 sohc non-vtec with 127 hp, which is the same as the dx.
The ex has the D17A2 sohc vtec with 127 hp.
They have the same displacement, bore, and stroke, however the compression ratio is different
lx- 9.5:1
ex- 9.9:1
