1996 Honda Civic EX Crank No Start
My daughter's 1996 Civic Ex recently didn't start for her in the morning before school. She said she heard a whining sound and smelled gas. Not sure what the whining sound would be and we haven't been able to reproduce it. That night I took a look at it and it would crank, but would not start. The next day we were able to start it after a lot of cranking, there was quite a bit of smoke from the tailpipe. The next couple of days it fired right up. Today it took quite a few cranks for it to start and there was a lot of smoke from the tailpipe, the rpms also jumped to 3k at the start, then dropped. The smoke also slowly diminished. It seems that the longer it sits the harder it is to start. I'm assuming gas is leaking into the cylinders, just not sure where to start with diagnosing the problem. Once it's running, there are no issues, accelerates strong, idle is fine. The car has 186k on it, we've had it for a year and haven't done anything to it besides change the oil. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
What color was the smoke? If it was black, then yeah, you might have a leaky injector. To diagnose, you'll need a fuel pressure gauge that allows fuel to flow to the injectors. Hook it up, turn the key to ON(II), and check the pressure. Now turn the car off. Pressure should be maintained for 2 hours after turning the car off. If it isn't, you have a leaky injector.
Call up these guys, and see about sending your injectors to them for servicing.
