I've got another thread here but didn't want to garble it up(97 civic cx misfire). So I pulled the plugs to swap them for ngk's. May need injectors still but this is a much cheaper first step. Car has been feeling like it's loading up so I was surprised to find it lean. I've been getting a code for a misfire in cylinder 4.

 

Have you upgraded your ignition system? One problem you could be having is your not running the correct plugs. If you upgrade your plugs to something other than stock you may need to upgrade your ignition system to accommodate for the higher spark required to efficiently use those plugs. That could cause a misfire.

 

I put stock plugs in it Friday at work. I drove home and it was fine. Even the cel turned off. I made a stop got back in the car fired it up and the miss came back and so did the cel. Yesterday I used a screwdriver to listen to the injectors while it was missing at idle. I could here them all clicking the same. I also unplugged the #4 inj. And the engine idle dropped way down. I realize this still doesn't rule out a partially clogged one tho.

 

Do a compression test. That will tell you if everything is working mechanically (well, mostly tell you)

 

Is the misfire constant or only when cold?

 

Have you looked at the wires ? Cap and rotor ?

 

It's completely random. It used to only happen randomly above 40 degrees. Now it's whenever. If I hold in the clutch and bounce it off the rev limiter it will usually clear out

 

is this the correct firing order? I believe it is. I am going to have to check my plug wires. I was thinking the cylinders went 1-4 left to right. Be nice if its just a plug wiring issue. -13 out right now its gonna have to wait.

So all this time you were trying to fix an issue with the #4 cylinder but were actually working on #1? Wow that sucks.

Do a compression check and see what the values tell you.

Have you checked the spark on all four cylinders?

Have you ohm'd the injectors for a quick check?

 

Embarrassing as it is that's what I did. Plug wires are correct and what I've checked so far has been done on all the cylinders.
Have not checked the voltage yet tho. Only listened to the injectors.

 

 

it warmed up enough i decided to work on the missfire issue. The more ive been thinking about it the more it seems like an electrical issue. So Sat. i decided to check out the all the contacts on the plug wires and make sure they are tight. I ordered aftermarket ones when i did the tuneup so i never really checked them out. So, now that im actually working on the right cylinder id squeezed the connectors tighter. I was looking iside the plug end on the #4 cylinder and there is hardly any wire coming thru the insulation to make contact with the plug. I used a screwdriver and folded the wire over the best i could but there is maybe 1/8" of contact wire showing. I fired it up it idled smooth and after a few minutes the cel went out. I've been driving it all day and as of right now the car is fine. No miss no cel. Now ive got to contact the mfg and rip them a new one and get some replacements. The car seems much stronger and is reving and idling better. Hope this was the issue as its an easy fix and i can stop cussing at the car.

Alright man, I'm about to drop $118.90 CAD on a set of plug wires that would normally cost me $24.00 USD.

If I see zero performance gains, I'm holding you responsible for this ish.

 

Lucky you, up here the NGK's are 120 bucks CAD already. Accel was the cheap option at 79.99.

With your exchange rate at 1.20 per dollar, yer looking at maybe 100 bucks, and should never have to change the wires again. And if you do, they do offer swapping a single wire if that is all that is damaged. Guess that means you have to own the car for 8 more years to pay for itself.

I can only wish I could get NGK wires for 25 bucks...... Thanks for adding salt to the wound.

 

Nobody said anything about NGK... I use proline wires and change em every year because lifetime warranty.
