What is an EG?
I am still a little unsure as to what exactly EG relates to. I have heard many different answers.
I have a 1995 Honda Civic Hatchback VX. The first new numbers and letters of the VIN are 2HGEH237.
So is this an EH? Would that be correct to say?
The person I bought it from said that it is an EG because in Japan it reads backwards so GE = EG. Is that correct?
I have also heard that all 92-95 civics are EG's.
And last but not least that only SI's are EG's.
So... what really is an EG?

Eggs are laid by female animals of many different species, including birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fish, and have been eaten by humans for thousands of years. Bird and reptile eggs consist of a protective eggshell, albumen (egg white), and vitellus (egg yolk), contained within various thin membranes. Popular choices for egg consumption are chicken, duck, quail, roe, and caviar, but the egg most often consumed by humans is the chicken egg.
<tee hee>
EG is just short-hand for the chassis code of 92-95 Civics, but it's imprecise because 92-95 Civics - as you noted - have more than one chassis code: EG#, EH#, EJ#. Probably "EG" was settled upon because the top-of-the-line vehicle of the day was the EG6 (Hatchback) and EG9 (Sedan). Your VX is technically an EH2.
The person who said "in Japan it reads backwards", is completely out to lunch.

Just an EH2. Poster above me is 2/3rds right, it's the 4th, 5th, and 6th digit in the VIN. Though I did chuckle when he called you GEH.
You need to google Civic chassis codes to get a handle on things, and school yourself.

First digit of the VIN - the country where it was assembled
Second and third digits - the company that makes it
fourth, fifth, and sixth digits - chassis identifier
The rest are pretty irrelevant options identifiers, security check digits, and the serial number.

EG = Common name for 92-95 Civic.
To get specific you can call them by their actual chassis codes, but not everyone will know what you are talking about:
US VX & CX = EH2
US & JDM Del Sol VTEC (B16) = EG2
JDM Civic SiR hatchback (B16) = EG6
etc etc....
The problem with this stupid forum is that it includes 92-95 Civics, 96-00 Civics, and all Del Sols. Therefore it difficult to know exactly what a person is talking about when they post a question with little info. Saying "I have an EG hatch" or "an EK sedan" is simple enough and gets the point across to a rather wide audience. The experienced users will still know what you mean, as well as the noobs. Pretty much anybody who knows hondas will know what your'e talking about.

I still have to look up when someone says they are working on their EM1 as to what car that is.
But if they had just provided the normal y/m/m/t/c info like you do any other car, you know exactly what information to go digging up.
I still curse at myself for my screen name. I didn't know much about Hondas when I registered. I actually have an EH3.
I still wonder why people say they have an EG Civic as opposed to, say, a 93 Civic. 0 savings in characters/typing effort.

I did the same thing with my screen name......way back in 2004. Doesn't bother me one bit. Even in real life, people still call my car an EG. If I corrected them and said "no, it's an EH2", they would probably look at me crosseyed.
My old 1993 Civic si hatch was a EH3 i believe and my friends 1995 Coupe ex said EJ6 i think. And i think all 96-98 Civics are EJs also and i believe 99-00s were EM if im not mistaken or is it just them 99-00 SI
And im not 100% sure but i think Del sols have EG codes.
My 1997 coupe says EJ and my 97 hatch says EJ also lol.
I think people just say EK EG just because its easier. I wish i had a em1 SI.

DX/LX - EJ6
HX - EJ7
EX - EJ8
SI - EM1
Basically, if it came from the factory with a D16Y7, it was an EJ6. If it came with a D16Y5, it's an EJ7. If it came with a D16Y8, it's an EJ8. If it came with a B16A2, it's an EM1. Your friend's '95 EX may have been an EJ1, but it wasn't an EJ6.
EJ, EH, EG, they're all "valid" chassis codes, but they all have differences.
If you're looking for a kind of "over-arcing" chassis code to cover this entire section, and just want ONE, then realistically "EJ" would be more fitting, but there are way more stupid people who just call them all EGs and EKs.

Not "over-arcing" by any means...Straight from my 1994 helms:
EH2 = 1.5L hatchback
EH3 = 1.6L hatchback
EG8 = 1.5L sedan
EH9 = 1.6L sedan
EJ2 = 1.5L coupe
EJ1 = 1.6L coupe
EH2 = 1.5L hatchback
EH3 = 1.6L hatchback
EG8 = 1.5L sedan
EH9 = 1.6L sedan
EJ2 = 1.5L coupe
EJ1 = 1.6L coupe

So, three EH's, two EJ's, and one EG. Add in the 6G codes (the USDM ones at least, because the majority of HT members are in the Americas), and you have three EH's, five EJ's, one EG, and one EM. Add in the Del Sols, and you have four EH, six EJ, three EG, and one EM.
For the second-least common chassis code in the range, there's entirely too many stupid people calling them what they aren't

Answer a question that's been covered a million times, and we're beating a dead horse. Call someone out for asking a question that's been covered a million times, and we're ******** chasing away new members.
