Speedometer working sporatically? (Now not at all)(Solved)
Hey guys, Hank here. I have 94 Civic EX 2Dr. For the past month or two the speedometer works intermittently whenever it wants. But just a few minutes ago i noticed it working and then i pushed the clutch and let off the gas to change gears and it dropped again. Then when i got back on the gas it worked half way.(It still wanted to jump, but it wasn't staying at 0.) Please help me figure out what is going on. Also sitting still pushing on the gas it didn't move.
Usually the first thing to check/change is the sending sensor on the top rear of the tranny. They go bad with use or if your hoses leak coolant on the plug in can cause them to swing or bounce while driving.
But that doesn't explain it changing with the throttle./: i would like to not spend $100 on a sensor and not fix it if that's not it.
My speedo is doing the same thing.
I picked up a VSS to swap out (haven't done yet) to rule that side out but when I smack the dash or the plastic cover of the gauges my speedo kicks back to normal.
I am going to have to pull the bezel out and pull the gauges out as I don't think mine is the VSS as smacking the dash or the face of the gauges would have no effect.
What I'm not sure of is whether there is a shorting wire in the harness to the gauges or if it's something to do with the gauge itself or if it's the solder joints on the ribbon board on the back of the gauges.
Anyways, that story tells you it's typically one of those four things, the VSS, Wire Harness/Ground, Speedometer itself or ribbon board on the back of the gauges.

Ive had a problem with a cluster before. The actual pc board was worn out
You can also check the signal voltage
Check for ground to batt continuity
Check for continuity from vss output to cluster input
Im not gonna give you all the pin locations that stuff is all online
Usually if i go out of my way to help out i end up being an *******

Well like i said i would like to keep from spending that extra $100 on a vss. But from what other posts i have read and videos i have seen, your problem will probably be the speedometer itself. Which isnt a hard replacement and it is also alot cheaper. its like $35-$65 for a new speedometer. or atleast thats what ive seen. But thanks guys for the help. I will tack down the wires and see if one is shorting somewhere which is what im leaning to with the fact that i could push the gas and it work. But Thanks Guys

Please don't create multiple threads for your one issue. Thanks.

didnt mean to, meant to make a new thread since i had tried fixing it but i see now that it just added it to this one, wow oka then. but thanks ill check that link out
Just update this thread with all new pertinent information as you go. Don't make a thread each time you have a new development on a problem.
The circuit on the back of the cluster is probably getting frail. It happens, you might wanna start looking for another.

Hey man, can you put what it was that was causing you grief and what you did to fix it? This could help others down the road.
