Default Direction of crank rotation

I had never noticed before, but the engine runs "backward" from what most vehicles run.
Is there a reason why Honda did this?
Is there a benefit to doing it this way compared to the way that most vehicles run?

I was rather surprised when I saw this, and was curious if anyone knew.

Thanks!

Yeah pretty much every pre-01 Honda engine turn counterclockwise. The S2000's F20C and the newer Civics and RSX's have clockwise rotating cranks. I'm not sure about the new Accords.

Was this a result of an engineering decision for a particular reason?
