Default Intermittent check engine light for EGR.

Hey guys,

I need to get a hold of a D series guru. So I have a 92 Civic EG Hatch CX. The CEL is intermittent and resets every time I shut the car off. It'll come on after long periods of highway driving. I checked the code and its the EGR but Ive removed the EGR and cleaned it out and checked the plunger and everything. It seems to be fine. Should I try replacing it? My niece's husband said to just get a 94 ECU cuz it doesn't even look for the EGR but I don't really trust him so I don't wanna go that route. Thanks for reading.

Can I assume that you have a Civic VX with the stock D15Z1 engine and P07 ECU? Or is this an engine swap? Post some pictures of the car, engine bay, and ECU.

Please verify engine code and ecu code. Also it is a high chance your egr passageways are clogged so that will need to be clean.

Yes, stock everything. D16. CX model. I've already took it off and cleaned it. Obviously it didn't do anything.

You don't have a stock 92 Civic CX if it has a D16 engine and is throwing an EGR code.

Hmm I stand corrected. Far as I know it's a CX. Here's a few pics. Sorry for the crappy pics. It's in my driveway right now. Apparently it's a D15. Smh. Anyway here ya go.

Here's the ECU, appears to be P07. Don't know if you can zoom but I can see the digits;

Engine code;

VTEC-E engine;

Looks like a JDM engine swap.

Post the head code:

Next locate the components of the EGR system and check whether anything is missing or disconnected.

Looks like a 92 D15b from a VTI. But only a head code will tell us for sure. Although the absence of a Double VTEC Solenoid shows that its clearly a single VTEC OBD-1 model from the 92-95 VTI's.

Are you sure its an EGR code? are you using an OB2->OB1 harness or something? Or just using a straight OBD2 harness modded (stupid, but I have seen it).

I just pulled the code with the plug above the ECU. I haven't done it in a long time but I'm 100% sure it's egr code. Did it numerous times. I did the diag tree. Still nothing. I replaced it with a used part. Still same result.

Idk Jimster. I haven't modded anything in the car. The reverse if anything. I just ordered n installed the stock intake. I replaced old parts such as wiper motor, floor mats, window moldings. Stuff like that. Otherwise it's how I got it.

Not sure if it relates but the PO said the MAF sensor was switched out to MAP or the other way around or something. There was a connector near the firewall and I asked why it's not plugged with the other side of it and he said he had it wired up to the MAP/MAF/whichever. Idk

Reset the ECU and do it again.

I did the diag tree.
Convince me.

There are no MAF sensors on Honda vehicles... They had a couple cars with MAF's in the 80's from what I remember. Nothing else has a MAF. Honda's are all MAP even in obd1.

I've reset the ECU also. Every time I shut the car off then start it up again whenever, the light is off for avg 10-15 minutes. Putting the kid to sleep. I'll get the head code in a bit. I'll try to get to the diag tree again soon. It's my Friday so I'll try to squeeze some time in tomorrow.

That's correct for at least Civic/Integra up to 01. Newer Honda are starting to use MAF

lmfao really? I know 04 Civic doesn't have a MAF. Maybe past 2005?

What a complete joke Honda has become. They have literally gone backwards in tech to the tune of almost 25 years. They have crappy leaf-spring suspensions also these days. Wouldn't ever purchase one even if it was the only auto mfg left.

What is a P02? I see from the pic that it has VTEC.. Typically those heads were P08. Is it possibly a VTEC-E variant?

The VTEC-E heads are P07-1 that I have seen. I haven't seen a P02-1.

you are right, they are p07... So what engine is that?
I honestly have no idea what cast that is. I spent some time googling it and couldn't find anything...
