DIY icebox hydrolock scare
for those of you that dont live in Tx and havent been watching nation wide weather reports us houstonians just got drowned, and lucky me i just recently installed a DIY icebox. to make matters worse I let my girlfriend borrow my car to go to work the morning before we got flooded, and wouldnt you know it, shortly before she got off work, up comes the water. So my engine was in the hands of someone else in its most fragile moment, she said she was following a big truck through some high water when it happened, the engine started to seize so she killed it and pushed it into a parking lot (while 8mos pregnanat) she hitchhiked home and told me the story. After reading about a few hydrolock scares i was sure she had bent a rod or soemething. the next day we drove out to my car tried to start it and it made an awful grinding noise, we killed it immeadiatly, actually it didnt really get to the point of starting. so i got out the old tools took off the intake hose poured out the water, used the old sock trick for a filter, took out the sparkplugs, turned over the engine and holy old faithful, 4 gysers exploded shooting out water far enough for me to see it over my hood, while i was in the drivers seat. i did that till all water was gone, changed the oil and changed the transmission fluid and low and behold the car runs like nothing ever happened. im really reaaly glad my girlfriend was smart enough to kill the engine, anyway just though i d let everyone know what happened and how it was fixed in case it happens to them. later
You got lucky.
You should thank your girlfriend for reacting the way she did. Shutting off the engine? Pushing it into a parking lot? Any "regular" girlfriend would have waited 'til the engine failed completely.

HAHAHA!!!! Hey I had a similar situiation. Flooded the motor with my AEM and then pushed it like 6 blocks to my house, had it towed to a mechanic. They drained the cyliders and it ran fine. SUPER F-ing lucky...

people never learned. I am tired of seeing hydrolocked motors. Is it really worth the extra 5 HP? This guy took his GSr to the shop my car is being worked on after he hydrolocked his engine during a bad flood here in TX 2 months ago. He was telling me he had to take out a loan for $6000 to get his car fixed! That's more than I paid for my 92 GSR!
boro if this was the boyfriends of pregnant girlfriends forum the story would have read differently, of course i was concerned, but she came home just fine....my other baby didnt ;P

ITR OEM cold air intake is still the best. That extra 5-10 hp is totally not worth the trouble

You got lucky bro! How deep exactly was the water? Because the way I see it, the water has got to be like 1 foot deep.. which would mean that your front bumper isnt even clearing the water, and I don't see why you would even drive anything besides a truck or suv in those kind of conditions.. just a thought. I live in the bay area, cali.. if water levels ever got to more than like 5 inches here I wouldnt drive faster than like 15MPH.. I'd rather bust out a kayak or raft than risk damage to my car!
