Painting a ITR a different oem ITR color. Opinions???
So I'm debating on picking up this shell. It's Phoenix yellow, my last color choice, and the original paint is shot so it'll need a repaint no matter what. I really wanted a champ white or black shell (doesn't matter which black) but I can't seem to find one right now. I can hold off and wait till the color I want is available or I can take advantage of what is there now which is a very straight body with all matching vins. My question is what do you all think if I were to paint the shell champ white inside and out. Is that a no no when talking about the R chassis? The other thing holding me back is I've always had a rule, don't paint over yellow or red.
I wouldn't.
If it has all matching vins (especially on the bumpers too), you don't want to be the guy who ruins/destroys the what remains original of this car. I'd keep it yellow, back tape the edges so you preserve the vins and the original paint in the doorjambs. IMO, changing the color of an ITR today is worse than ditching the original motor for a K series or cutting off the original rad support to put on a JDM front end. I think these are no nos too.
If you really want an R now, you could always grab this one and then keep an eye out of a black or CW shell to trade town the road and swap your stuff over very easily but you probably know that already.

You could always do a professional wrap, that way it's not permanent and it still protects the paint underneath.

Do what you really want. My car is not the OEM color. Sadly it was painted to CW from PY from the previous owner.
At first I didn't mind but when the paint was starting to flake off in the engine bay. They did a good job painting the exterior but the jams wasn't all that great.
When I gutted my Interior, It was still PY inside the shell. Annoyed the hell out of me when I had yellow inside, then paint flaking on my jams and engine bay.
Then I decided to strip it all down and repaint it the right way. Went with the rio yellow pearl from the S2000. Now its a completely different car from what it was before

Thank you for your replys. Don't get me wrong I build my cars how I want and for me. The question was more so to see what you all thought as far as the value of the car if I did it and how you thought the paint would hold up. Like ^^^^ you said I don't want paint shipping so my thoughts were to get as much paint off as I can. Milano red was actually my second choice since it wasn't offered here.
Straight shell is it a salvaged title?
I say paint it whatever color you want folks would pay more for a clean rebuilt R then a R with original shotty paint. The debate will always be there about "value" and what you've done to your car. Are you looking to flip it later and make a profit? Have a quality shop do the work and you shouldn't run into paint chipping issues down the road.

yes salvaged due to theft. Complete exterior and original dash, The car will get repainted no matter what it just a matter if I decide to color change it. I just want my car to be worth something in the end if I plan to sell it or not.
I always said if I ever get my hands on a yellow R I am painting it Milano red. Even my homie said, there you go you always said you would do it. But now the idea of painting red over yellow and then when its all said and done possibly looking like a replica R kinda gets to me. I have never owned a red car either so its hard to convince myself haha.
haha well see. To many PY's around me lately haha.
Love milano red R's maybe it's because we can't get them here but something about them. Salvaged title might as well change the color up! At least it was an OEM option and it's a real R so it will always be worth more then a GSR or R clone.
I almost painted mine Milano red. That was my first choice. When I got the price quote for the paint, it was pretty expensive.
You really cant beat a freshly painted Milano red. Maybe ill do to with my rhd R somethime.

I would say in the end paint it what you would want your ITR to look like, it's your canvas. Sounds like you like the CW color which always looks nice IMO all the colors look great but IMO yellow is my least favored color. But as long as it's done right as far as stripping it down and spraying it inside and out you can't go wrong. there's nothing more ugly than a different color in the engine bay or hatch..

yeah I think were on the same page. Yeah there is not way the entire car would not get painted. This isnt my first honda build haha. I think ive seen that build on IG and I believe it started out PY also haha.
Yeah well see once I cross that bridge what color it gets done. I will for sure keep it USDM front end. That is what I want. This will be like a oem resto with my twist. The milano red paint would be point less to me if I did a jdm front. Might as well just get a jdm rhd milano red r haha.
Sounds like a very clean shell, even though it is salvage I don't think all salvage titles are the same. You do mention resale value. Even though the car is salvage title, I can see you getting decent money down the road if you plan to sell it. I can see this car stockfish with a R DOT block and tranny or a legit swap from HMO, JDM Recaros and 16s going for decent money if the car is a rust free southern california shell with fresh paint that has all VINs and never been smacked.
I'd think to the right buyer it would be more desirable that a clean titled car that had the original rad support cut off or is missing the original motor and then priced accordingly.
But if you are going to repaint it, go all out and get the shell media/soda blasted. MR is definitely the color to do it if your gonna change it. For the record, I have a CW, but I would rather have a MR one like my old GSR...

well for the last few months I was racking my brain over what shell to get. I also had access to a white shell that was clean title however this car was stripped down to the bone. Literally just clean quarter panels. In my eyes just because it holds a clean title (probably because it was reported to insurance) doesnt make it better. If I ever did go to sell it, the potential buyer would probably wonder why in the hell there is not one single matching VIN on the car. Now that seems more sketch then a salvaged car with all matching VINS.
I did wind up picking up the matching VINS shell. This is going to be a long slow build as I want to restore the car completely to new condition and I am a new father to twin girls, so I have no intentions on rushing through this. The biggest debate in my head right now is to keep it yellow or not! haha. Well see when the time comes to actually go to paint I will cross that bridge then. Thank you all for your input!!
