Default B Series motor for 4.9 final drive?

I am just curious what you guys would put in to go along with a b16 trans with 4.9 final drive/lsd. And not for track lol, just to have fun with around town, little to no highway.

Going to be in the higher rpm range most gears, so personally thinking gsr or type r motor b16b/b18c's

any suggestions? STOCK WITH BOLT ON's

Go!

Love my jdm ITR tranny with a 4.785 FD. It was too much rpm on the highway, so it got an LS 5th gear.
I think the 4.785 FD is plenty for the streets. Any more shifting than that for me, and it would probably start to wear on me. It would be quick though, that's for sure.
What engine are you mating to it?

Oh wait, you wanna know what engine we would recommend, not final drives. Forgive me I'm slow.
Well since b20vtec is out of the question, the next best would be an ITR/B18c5 in my opinion. But for that kind of money, Id look hard at an H2B setup...just sayin.

I have a 4.929 final drive in my B16 now. Using a G"LS"R block (GSR block, LS crank, 11.8:1 pistons). I had the LS 5th gear and dropped me WAY out of the powerband in the b16. It was like I had an anchor holding me back as I was going through the gears. Substituted it with a GS-R 5th.. much better now.

I'd stick to the GS-R, ITR block/head setup. Although the G"LS"R is a great idea that I'm glad I participated in.

I had an old Prelude SR-V, had built a type S for it, made 220whp and put an MFactory 5.16 final drive in it.......man it was a blast around town.

Welp, I have a b17 transmission THE BLACKSHEEP!! but its basically a b16 transmission, carbon synchros, ITR lsd, and a gear x 4.9 final drive. putting it into a 91 crx si so staying cable trans made my day when i came across it.

Currently have a 0bd0 b18a1 non vtec motor running in the rex, and i assume id lose a lot of power due to wasting the low end torque on such a short trans.

the game plan, is pick up a b16b CTR longblock, if i can figure out the wiring problems... "no vtec pressure or crank sensor... need to wire in vtec.. vss.. check engine.. obd1 ecu with a basemap... etc "

but it sounds like a higher rpm vtec motor is the route to go. will prob make a build thread in a week or 2 when **** starts coming together

You will not waste low end torque.
Higher final drive will only make it accelerate faster until you start to lose traction. Regardless of engine size.
Imagine a 250 whp H2B with a 4.9 fd in a crx. .. you would prob roast 3rd gear rolling into the throttle.
Btw~ if your still looking for a b16b longblock in about 6 months, mine should be out by then

welp.... i still think a higher rpm band would be better suited for a 4.9 f/d. every shift would drop me in vtec. anyways, my current ls has been beat to **** and somehow still runs with metal shavings in the oil every change *1k miles* lol. time for a change.... seriously need a wiring guru though

Highly recommend this mod.

I am using a hybrid oem gear setup. Its like a close ratio setup, however I use the mfactory straight cut gears. All with a 4.9 final drive. Its a blast.

ATS/CARBONETIC also makes a very nice 4.9 final drive im using and would highly recommend. It comes with a new matching ratio first gear and the needle bearings, shaft, etc IIRC.

Carbonetic Final Drive Gear; Does Not Fit EG6 Equipped with Stock Viscous LSD ACURA INTEGRA

looks to be a little less than the Mfactory as well...

Also id most definitely say that a 4.9 FD needs a high revving vtec motor to take advantage of this the most.

I think the 4.928 would be an excellent upgrade to ANY B Vtec engine. For the Non-Vtecs, stick with the B16 4.4

i'd like to step up from my ITR 4.7 to a 4.9 but its just too hard for the road on long trips for me (already at 4000rpm at 110km/hr - speed limit) for a couple of hours is tiresome.

Will do it when it turns to a track only car so I can actually use 5th

Im using a MF 4.9FD(EK9 s4c tranny) on my 193whp b16a EK4 Sedan . Very fun to drive in the streets of Manila. It's like driving a 2liter

Ohh, goes 13.8 @101mph too

Pyro has it right.

Stick with the b16, anything with more power and you'll wish you had another final drive. Even the 4.7 with a anywhere around 200 hp is no fun as a daily drive.

With a 4.9 it'll sound like you're always racing except you are just trying to keep up with traffic, lame.

Only other place you might use a 4.9 is trying to run through 5 gears in the 1/4 or playing with tire size to cross the trap in the power.

On my old 2 liter with the JDM ITR 4.7 FD trans, I would take off from a red light (driving normally) and be shifting into 3rd gear as I crossed the other side of the intersection (shifting at 2500~3000 rpms).
1st gear up to about 15~20 mph, 2nd gear up to about 30mph, 3rd gear up to about 40 mph, etc. It was normal for me to cruise around town in 3rd/4th gear. With the B16B I have currently, it's not as bad since its not as powerful and Torquey, so it really benefits from the close gear ratios and I'm not shifting quite as often.
I guess it all comes down to personal preference.

I will be using the 4.9 (replacing the 4.7) with my 2+ liter on the circuit and on the road too. Also, I will be swap in the B16 shorter 4th and 5th instead of ITR 4th and LS 5th.
