I just bought this 01 v6 accord and the oil pan has oil all over it..Got under it,cleaned it and ran it to find leak,it looks to be coming from the oil pan bolts?Is this common,how do I stop them from leaking??Thanks. ALSO,there seems to be oil coming from cam seal towards front of car.I guess it's a cam seal,they're at the drivers side end of head..How hard are those to fix (leak)???

 

Oil leaks are pretty common on a 13 year old car. You fix the leaks by replacing the seals. the oil pan also requires honda bond sealant. Replacing cam seals requires removing the cam gears which means removing the timing belt. The cam and crank seals are normally changed when the belt is changed as preventive maintenance. Unless you know when the timing belt was changed it probably should be done anyway so you can change the seals while you're in there.

None of this is hard, it all depends on your experience working on motors.

 

Well,belt,pump,and cam seal were done 3k miles ago..And I'm trying to find out why the pans leaking from the pan bolts only?Pan is not leaking anywhere else.Also ,is there a write up anywhere on pan removal?Thanks for the response..

 

My guess would be cheap parts or improper installation. Personally I only use genuine Honda gaskets. While I like felpro for most cars I have only been able to seal a Honda pan with a Honda gasket. As for the procedure, do some surfing and the 98-02 FSM is out there in PDF. I think it's just dropping the exhaust down pipe and removing the pan. But there might be engine to trans brackets that have to be removed. I've come across that on my Del Sol.

 

after cleaning everything thoroughly, now I can only see oil coming from this cam seal (is that what it is??)..How hard is it to fix?

2001 V6, I can tell you that is the camshaft thrust cover and it requires a rubber O-Ring for a seal.



Item No.6 - Camshaft Thrust Cover Assy., front. Honda Part #12230-P8A-A00
Item No.15 - Camshaft Thrust cover O-RING (48.5X2.4) Honda part # 91301-P8A-A00 This is more than likely what you will need. You could try tightening the two bolts and see if they were loose.

Thanks man,ya I'm chasing oil leaks..I also found oil leaking buy engine mount bracket,thought it was from this cover but the more I read,I may have a porous block?Sure hope not!

 

Ok,I think I found a majority of my leaks..Front engine mount bolt leaks,front and back cam thrust covers leak..Also the leak from front oil pan bolt is coming from above,best I can see it is from the cover where belt tension idler pull is..Ok,next question,where can I find a "how to" on timing belt replacement?I have searched the sight and only found one for the 4 cylinder..

 

Here's some pics of leaks I found,before I take it apart what would be a educated guess to what it'd be,like I say,belt and seals were done 3k miles ago.The one circled "oil" is where I actually seen oil running down..It's right above front passenger side corner of oil pan..Both Corners leak oil,but it's obviously coming from above..Any help is greatly appreciated!

the bad news is u have a V6 and most people on here are not familiar with these engines (myself included)

the good news is a engine is a engine and someone should be able to help.

cam seals may not have been installed correctly. if the seal is not flush on all sides (360*) then it WILL leak. easy fix once u access it. same with the cam seal.

heres a short list of engine gaskets:
valve cover
distributor
cam
crank (front main seal)
rear main seal
oil pan

the hardest is the rear main which requires dropping the trans. Good Luck

Ya I'm learning these Hondas,I'm a chevy guy but this will be my daughter's first car,it's only got 110k on itand I got it for a fair price,runs great just leaks oil!I was just trying to see if I should start disassembling it or if I'm on the right path to fixing the leak..I'm thinking cam seals??Maybe a front main seal too.

 

I guess next step is to use some dye to pin point oil leaks,I'm really hoping it's not the oil pump seal..Don't know If I'm comfortable doing that repair,just have never done one.Also,I found a good video on YouTube On timing belt too.

Removed covers and still can't figure out where it's coming from,I'm thinking I have a porous block or oil pump needs to be resealed?The pics are marked in red where I'm seeing oil,cam seal are dry..cranks dry,the oil by filter housing in pic is my car..How hard is it to reseal oil pump if I have too aND has anyone ever jb welded the block and where??

 

Have you tried cleaning those areas off with carb cleaner/degreaser and going for a drive to see where the source of the leak is? I think someone already menthioned trying this.

 

I would do this. Also get some fluorescent dye to add to the oil, it really helps identify what is a fresh leak vs residual oil stuck in a crack that you couldn't clean 100%. All you need is a cheap backlight (they make tiny flashlights for this) to get the dye to show up. In my experience the yellow/greenish dye is much easier to see than the reddish/purple kind.

 

Yes,I've done all of that..Right after I drive it I can see fresh oil running down the oil pump cover and down the oil pan..Now the leak by oil filter housing I can't see where it's coming from..I want to pressurize the block and then see if I can tell..I was just wondering if anyone on her has had this kinda leak before?

 

hondabond is black, permatex oil is black, most other oil FIPG (form in place gasket) is black.

on your oil pump the fipg is likely not rated for oil, hence the leak. should be simple fix once u tear down the engine

 

I think I found the leak ,it looks like the rubber o ring gasket in between oil pump and block was leaking and running down both sides to corners of pan..Also,the pocket next to idler bolt may be porous,just cause I'm this far I'm gonna go ahead and epoxy it and use recommended coated bolts per bulletin,then reassemble.So what adhesive in between pump and block?It was gray,use honda bond??

 

honda bond or permatex oil. permatex is available at autozone advance auto etc. honda bond is dealer only but its OEM.

scrape off old sealant with flathead screw driver and clean with degreaser. dry with shop towel and reapply new sealant. i use permatex on my valve cover gasket and oil pan gasket with no issues.
