coil melted

Default coil melted

so i have a 90 wagovan with a d15. today i was doing a full tune up i pulled the dizzy cap and the spring on the coil was melted into the cap, and part of the coil was melted. what would have done this? im still surprised it was running lol

Wrong part name. You mean distributor cap. I had the same problem. It's melted but current can still flow through it as long as it touches the rotor. Coil is the square thing mounted on the distributor.

Both the coil and cap melted. the coil is burnt up pretty bad. if i can figure out how to post pics to a post i will put them up

Happened to me recently. What happens is that the rotor gets hung up on a point, and the shaft tries to continue spinning, eventually, it starts spinning with the rotor jammed heats up the rotor and it melts.

The bearing in the dizzy causes it, as the bearing goes out, the shaft stops spinning straight and begins to wobble causing the rotor to hang up

it can also be caused by having a bad connection at one of your plugs or a wire, voltage in the coil builds a lot higher then it's supposed to and can arc through the insulation on the windings, happens a lot when people try to check spark by holding a wire near the engine on these, or a wire is off,

lots of guys call it a dizzy, same thing just short for distributor

When posting, click the yellow icon top middle that highlights as "insert image". Then follow instructions.

Or.

Take pic > put on your computer > upload to photobucket > copy/paste the [img] code from photobucket into the post. Google is your friend.
