Hello HT. I haven't posted here in awhile since my car hasn't had any issues lately. My driver's side turn signal has some issues now.

1.) When the headlights are on, both turn signal bulbs will stay lit like its supposed to... but the left light will not blink (it starts blinking rapidly, and only the rear will blink).

2.) OR, the left turn signal will blink normally when signaling left, and it will also work with hazard lights on... but the turn signal will not stay lit when the headlights are on.

It seems to me that it could be a wiring issue. Unfortunately for me, wiring and electronics is not my area of expertise. I've switched the rear bulb with the front one (I'm referring to the driver's side), and the problem still persists with the front turn signal, so the bulbs are in working condition. I turned on my hazard lights, and I started inspecting my driver's side turn signal (that might not have been safe lol). It would stop or start blinking when I would rotate the bulb. When I saw that the bulb would start blinking with the hazard light on, I put the bulb back into the headlight, and the bulb stopped blinking. Pulling on the wires or moving the bulb seems to affect the way it works. I was thinking of replacing the turn signal socket since it had some black spot on one of the "coils" or whatever its called, or I might have to do some rewiring. What do you guys think?

 

Check the bulb(front).

The front turn signal bulb works just fine when it's placed in the taillight. It can't be the bulb

 

If it is a two filament make sure it is installed correctly.

 

Yes, it's a two filament bulb. Installing is fairly simple. You push down, then twist to lock it in place. I did the same thing with the passenger side, and I have no issue whatsoever on that side. I looked at the socket and there are some spots that look "melted". I'm not sure if it got too hot recently. I'll double check to make sure the bulb is on there correctly lol

 

Double check that the ground wires are good

 

The bulb has offset locking pins.

 

Someone tapped into that wire for side marker lights. Do you have a voltmeter?

Turn your hazards on, set the voltmeter to voltage, touch ground to chassis, and the other test lead to the connector where the red wire is. You should see on/off fluctuating voltage. If you don't, you have a wiring problem. Now, assuming you don't, touch the test lead to that clearish/blueish tee. Do you see voltage there? If so, remove the tee and inspect the wiring right at that spot for damage. If you don't, remove the tee, and test again for voltage where that tee was clipped in.

 

I used a multimeter (I set it to voltage), and voltage did in fact pass through the wire. Everything was working fine when I was inspecting the wires.... It worked when headlights were on and when signaling/using hazards. However, the bulb stopped blinking as soon as I put it back in the headlight. I tried my best to put the bulb back into the headlight without touching any other surface. When I was driving today, the left turn signal was blinking just fine... But after driving on the freeway and going through some bouncy roads, the blinker stopped working.

Edit: I haven't tested the tee for voltage yet. I will do that after I get off work.

 

Here's a picture of the socket. I might get a new one from the junkyard. I'm not sure if the metal contact points are going bad.

 

Since the problem is only happening when it feels like happening, either something is loose, or the wires are only "kind of" damaged, so the problem only shows up when they're sitting in the wrong position. Start off by removing that tee and repairing the wire at that spot. Also, repeat all of the above tests, playing with the wire while you do it. Shake it, jiggle it, bend it, wobble it, whatever.

 

Sometimes wires that have been tapped like that get exposed to the elements, and then ... corrosion sets in. Either at the T or the crimp connector is where I'd check first.
