Code Nine on Check Engine Light
I read in my Haynes manual how to use a jumper wire to run a diagnostic test, and pull the check engine code. From what I can tell, there is one code, and it is the number 9 over and over again. When I look up the code in my manual, it is saying "Number 1 cylinder position CYP." "Check the CYP sensor and the circuit." It asks me to test the CYP sensor for continuity, and if it doesn't check out, it says to replace the distributor "unit." What does the book mean by "unit?" Do they mean the entire distributor, or just the cap and rotor?
I have to say, I have not had a CEL on this car for ten years, then I started using fuel injection cleaner about 6 months ago, and now I am getting a CEL. I am guessing I shouldn't use that stuff on an older vehicle that is not used to it?
I appreciate any of your posts or comments.
Replace the entire distributor
edit: I actually recommend to start using fuel injector cleaners on old cars. Techron has been doing the job for me, I rather not replace what has been working for me.

i checked continuity, and there is none present. Next i pulled the backup fuse from the fuse box to clear the code. then i ran my timing light to make sure i am still at top dead center, and everything checks out. i guess i will just keep driving until i get another code, or it dies. or do you think its on its last leg and i should take care of it now? thanks again for your help.
ps - hero, your diagram shows the next step to replace the distributor "housing." does that mean just the cap and rotor, or should i replace the entire distributor

drove to home depot to get some stuff, and the CEL cam on again. it read code 9. i went to schucks and picked a new distributor. $180.00 with a lifetime warranty. i replaced that, set the timing again, and so far so good. thanks for all of your help.
Good work, Oregon. I might have tried a junkyard dizzy first for plenty less than $180 but even then you chance it, and there's no lifetime warranty. Glad to hear it's fixed.
