They can help make power when properly sized, designed, and tuned for your build sure but you run the risk of foreign matter along with bugs, dust, dirt and whatever else getting ingested in to it. The amount of gain you get might not be worth the risk depending on what measurable gain you can get. If your pushing for every conceivable advantage then go for it.

I have SU carbs, so they are a necessity, but I have air cleaners over them, the idea is to smooth the airflow into the carb throat

There are plenty of intakes that utilize velocity stacks with a filter. Don't worry about sucking up foreign matter. Even if you get a stack with no filter, a sock filter can easily be had.

If you want to gain 2 hp for 30-80 bucks, go for it. Unless you're talking ITBs or a Vision intake, that's a whole other story

Mine actually made more power on the dyno with the filter on the stack, but, at higher mph you would gain without the filter if it is forward facing out of the vehicle.

No need to worry about any foreign matter. Velocity stack and K&N filter.... works great!

It raised the MID to High PRM power range and gained MPG while cruising. Glad I made the switch!
