Default Rebuilding manual transmission - shim question

I'm currently tearing down my transmission to put a bearing, synchro, and seal kit in it to fix a third gear grinding problem.

I found that my transmission housing had a crack in it. I have a spare transmission housing I plan on using.

I see this note in the Honda service manual:

"If the transmission housing or clutch housing has been replaced, the tapered roller bearing preload must be adjusted."

Is this referring to the mainshaft thrust shim? That's the only shimming section in the service manual. Is there something else I need to be aware of?

It's a H2U5 transmission from a 93 Accord EX. My spare transmission is a H2A5. Thanks all.

you have to set the "axial clearance" of the taper bearings. using the term "preload" to me reads, "negative clearance." if this is the case (no pun) you would need to shim the bearings so that clearance can be measured in the positive (too much clearance) then subtract the correct amount of shim thickness. anyway, if i don't stop myself i'll get carried away talking about axial clearance...

looking in the FSM carrier bearing replacement and preload is under the "M/T Differential" subsection of the manual transaxle chapter. Process looks tedious but it is necessary to get right. bolt the case together with just the differential in it. torque the case bolts. check the rotational torque of the differential carrier with a "special tool." if it's too loose, add more shim. if too tight, use a smaller shim.

I'm sure this "special tool" is easy to find, right?

I see the section in the FSM now. Wow that looks like a huge pain! Thanks for the tip though.

Are the bearings and shims supposed to be lubricated before this preload adjustment is made (my assumption)? or installed dry?

I'm planning on making my own "special tool", looks like others have used a threaded rod with fender washers.

you don't need lubrication to check the preload. you will want to ensure that everything is super clean however.
