My friend's 97 Accord (4 cylinder, manual) suddenly won't engage its clutch. The pedal doesn't retract all of the way on its own, but the master and secondary cylinders are both full and there's no obvious leak. We tried siphoning out and replacing what fluid we could, plus manually pumping the pedal up and down to see if any air escaped. I wasn't able to find the bleed screw(s). Any recommendations on how to troubleshoot or possibly fix this? What other information can I provide?

I just converted my 97 to a manual from an automatic and finished today!

The bleed screw on the slave cylinder is on the front of the engine below one of the coolant hoses. If you are facing the front of the car, it is to the left of the front motor mount. Mine took a 9mm wrench to loosen and tighten the bleeder valve.

Push down on the clutch all the way and have your buddy open the bleeder valve on the slave cylinder. After air stops coming out, have him close the valve tightly. Let up/pull the clutch pedal up and repeat the process until all the air is out. Make sure the master cylinder for the clutch does not run out of fluid or it will just suck in air.

 

19Accord is correct. The pedal does that when you dont have any fluid in the line. So you may have a leak, issue with the master etc. There must be air entering the system somewhere. It takes awhile to bleed manually but dont give up it will work eventually. Keep bleeding it till the pedal firms up
