Icon2 Looking at buying AP1

Been looking into buying an AP1 lately. Most of the cars are older so they have significant mileage already. Is there anything in particular I should watch out for mechanically with AP1's that have higher mileage?

Planning to have a pre-purchase inspection done but just want to know for myself while I'm looking for cars still. Thx.

Thanks I've asked there too. Just covering my basis and asking around different sites.

Very unhelpful in here today.

To be fair, there's not a lot to look for in particular. If the car has been relatively well looked after, you'll be fine. Worn out roofs seem to be a big issue. Older dif's can be brittle if the car has been hard launched a lot.

They're a pretty reliable car if they're looked after.

make sure it shifts smooth, try to find one with no mods or one that has really good records. check out the top they get tears in them. other then that just normal stuff just try to get the cleanest nicest one you can.

Thanks for the replies. How does the motor hold up to high mileage? Car has been out for years now so most of the cars have pretty high mileage.

There's a guy we road race with that has an AP2 with over 130k on it. He races the **** out of that car, doesn't burn oil and still made 209whp (I think?). They're very well designed motors, higher mileage wouldn't scare me a bit.

I have 260k+ on my chassis. original f20c lasted to 195k til I ran it low on oil. tops are expensive if needing replaced, diff and trans are weak if beat on, AP2 pieces are slightly better. my whole drivetrain has been swapped but other than that, i've replaced the trunk popper, axles and thats about it.

AP1s have issues with valve retainers too.

I just bought an AP1, it has 19k miles on it. But I've seen and heard about s2ks having high mileage and still running fine. So I'm looking forward to having it as long as I like with reliability. So it if checks out with inspection I'm sure it will be fine.

Damn you're lucky. I don't think I've come across any AP1's with less than like 30k. Congrats.

this was an important one, the retainers can crack if over revved. some owners replaced them just to be safe.

to add to this thread, how often do owners mention their engines burn oil? or is it more likely with higher mileage? i only recently learned about the FRM cylinder liner, so naturally I am concerned about engine longevity.

f20's love eating oil nothing really helps stay away from mobil1. I had good experience with Castrol. A quart per 3k is pretty average esp if the engine sees a lot of vtec

^ It burns like gas in the f20 and also causes the tct to go quicker. I cant attest to the tct issue as I have not personally linked it to it failing because of Mobil 1. But when I did run Mobil 1 in my f20 I did eat a lot of it and also my tct did go at around 90K.

Yep Mobil 1 burns like crazy. I switched to Castrol and all is good again, although I still burn!

I wouldn't worry about the oil burning, they all do it.

2003 AP1 owner, just hit 80k
just like they said, if the car was maintain well then it should be good.
and yes these car do burn a lot of oil so constantly checking the dip stick is highly recommended.
