On an Ls/Vtec, when using a b16, gsr, or type r oil pump, do u have to get the matching vtec timing belt or will the ls timing belt work?

 

The water pump determines which timing belt you need. The oil pump is driven directly by the crankshaft, not the belt.

 

Thanks b19coupe. I'm tearing apart a friend's lsvtec and wondering if there is something to determine whether he already got the vtec oil pump or the stock ls one. What should I look for to determine between the two pumps?

 

All of the later model Tegs (96 & up) use the same oil pump. I can't tell you how to physically tell an older model non-vtec oil pump from a vtec one.
