Looking for Brake Specific Fuel Consumption (BSFC) curve for D16Y8
Hello everyone,
I've got a question I was hoping you could help me with. I'm doing engine testing on a D16Y8 VETCH engine out of a 1998 Acura EL, which is extremely similar to a Honda Civic SI as far as I know (I posted here since I figured there would be more info on Civics). I need to size a fuel tank that will be used inside our test cell and to do that, I need to find a BSFC map. I'm assuming a maximum engine speed of 4500 rpm with a max test length of 30 minutes, so using those parameters I was going to take the information from the BSFC curve and calculate how much gas would be used for a test like that to try to size my fuel tank. I've looked all over and called a few dealerships, but I've had no luck whatsoever. If anybody has any information or any suggestions, I'd really appreciate the help. Thanks in advance!

The BSFC of that engine is probably some internal document at Honda. Sometimes they release that info via an engineering paper for more "interesting" engines like the F20C.
Just FYI, it's not "extremely similar", it's the same motor. The Acura EL, 96-00 Civic SI (CDM), and 96-00 Civic EX (USDM) all use the same D16Y8, with the only considerable difference being the air assist system on 99-00. As far as a BSFC map, you might want to get a scangauge and a friend with a dyno, and chart one. There doesn't seem to be one anywhere online, and I guarantee all of the ecomodding crowd would absolutely love you for it. If you just want it strictly for testing, and you're afraid of running out of gas, then I'd recommend getting a 55 gallon drum, and running an external pump from it into your fuel system.
I'm curious, though. What are you looking to do with the map?

Hey guys, thanks for all your help. I've managed to solve my problem, but I'll try to answer your questions all the same. First, we're using a max of 4500 rpm due to a recommendation of the coordinator of our lab. For safety reasons and since our engine is older and we want it to last as long as possible, we're capping out tests at 4500 rpm. What I was trying to use the map for was to use the value to help me calculate the fuel consumption of the engine for a given speed and torque. I ended up just assuming conservative values since I couldn't find anything exact, but I'm confident that the values I got will be accurate enough for our purposes. All I needed to do was make sure our fuel tank wouldn't run out of fuel during a test, but at the same time work within our area constraints and not buy a huge tank. Hopefully this clears up any questions you guys had. The issue is solved, so mods can close the thread if they want. Thanks again for everybody's help!
