2002 Honda Accord DX Auto Shifter Cable
Ok guys.. I am feeling pretty stupid right now. Replaced the transmission in my Accord. Well I broke the plastic end off my gear shift cable. Went to Honda and bought a new one. Now I can not get the dang thing properly adjusted. Looked at my repair manual on proper install procedure but it is vague as crap. Anyone got the procedures or can help me out on this one? If I do the bracket in the middle first, the shifter side is short but if I put it all together and then try to bolt the bracket, the bracket is WAY out of place. I may be over thinking it too. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.
SHIFT CONTROL CABLE
Accord, Civic, Insight & Prelude
On Civic, shift gear selector to "N" position. On all other models, shift gear selector into "R" position. On all models, remove center console. Remove lock nut from shift cable mounting bolt. See Fig 1 . Separate shift cable end from shift lever assembly. DO NOT pull on shift cable guide pipe.
Push shift cable forward until it stops. On Civic, pull cable back two steps. On all other models, pull cable back one step. On all models, turn ignition on. Ensure "R" ("N" on Civic) indicator light is on. Insert a .24" (6.0 mm) pin into positioning hole in shift lever assembly. See Fig 2 .
Align flat surfaces of shift cable mounting bolt with shift cable end hole. Install shift cable lock nut and tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Remove pin from shift lever assembly. Move shift lever to each gear. Ensure each position indicator light comes on appropriately. Test drive vehicle and readjust if necessary.

Turn ignition on. Shift gearshift lever to "R" position. Turn ignition off. Slide lock tab on shift cable end holder downward. Using needle nose pliers, grasp shift cable lock in the middle. See Fig 3 . Remove lock from shift cable end and holder. Do not pry on shift cable lock with a screwdriver. Damage may occur to holder. Separate shift cable from shift cable holder.
Rotate socket holder on shift cable 1/4 turn. Tab on socket holder will be in opening of socket holder bracket. Slide holder to remove shift cable from socket holder bracket. See Fig 4 . Do not remove shift cable by twisting shift cable guide and damper.

Push shift cable down until it stops, then release it. Pull shift cable back one step so that shift cable is in "R" position. Do not hold shift cable guide to adjust shift cable. Turn ignition on and verify that "R" position indicator comes on.
Turn ignition off. Insert a .24" (6.0 mm) pin into positioning holes on gearshift lever bracket base and through positioning hole on gearshift lever. See Fig 5 . Gearshift lever must be in "R" position.
Rotate socket holder on shift cable to face tab on holder opposite of opening in socket holder bracket. Align holder with opening in bracket, then slide holder into bracket. Rotate holder 1/4 turn to secure shift cable. Do not install shift cable by twisting shift cable guide and damper.
Install shift cable end in shift cable end holder. Keep shift cable end and holder free of grease. Install NEW shift cable lock to secure shift cable end and shift cable end holder, then push lock tab up until it stops to lock the joint. See Fig 6 .
Remove .24" (6.0 mm) pin from gearshift lever. Move gearshift lever to each gear position, and verify A/T gear position indicator is in agreement with transmission range sensor. Allow front wheels to rotate. Start engine and check shift lever operation in all gears. Reinstall instrument cluster gauge assembly and lower cover.
